CHAPTER 2: THE STORM ESCAPE — THE SECRET FILES HER FATHER LEFT BEHIND

CHAPTER 2: THE STORM ESCAPE — THE SECRET FILES HER FATHER LEFT BEHIND

The rain came down harder as the hours passed.

Not the gentle kind of rain that brought peace.

This was the kind of storm that made the entire world feel like it was breaking apart.

Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the walls of the room where Sarah Sterling had been imprisoned.

Her room.

At least, that was what it used to be.

Three years ago, when she married Julian, she had decorated this space herself.

She chose every painting.

Every piece of furniture.

Every small detail.

She thought she was building a home.

Now she realized she had been decorating a cage.

Sarah sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the locked door.

Her cheek still burned where Eleanor’s diamond ring had cut her.

But the physical pain was nothing compared to the betrayal.

Julian.

The man who held her when her father died.

The man who promised he would stand beside her.

The man who told her:

"Your enemies are my enemies."

Those words had been a lie.

Because the biggest enemy she ever had was sleeping beside her every night.

Sarah closed her eyes.

She refused to cry.

Not because she wasn’t hurt.

She was.

But she knew something important.

Tears would not save her.

Anger would.

At midnight, the door opened.

Sarah immediately stood.

A guard entered carrying a tray of food.

“You need to eat.”

She looked at him.

“Did Julian send you?”

The guard avoided her eyes.

“Yes.”

Sarah almost laughed.

Of course.

Even now, Julian wanted to pretend he cared.

She walked toward the tray but didn’t touch it.

“Tell him something.”

The guard looked uncomfortable.

“What?”

Sarah leaned closer.

“Tell him I believed him.”

The guard frowned.

“Miss Sterling…”

“No.”

Her voice became colder.

“Tell him I believed every promise. Every word. Every fake apology.”

The guard lowered his eyes.

“And tell him…”

Sarah paused.

“Tell him the woman he betrayed is gone.”

The guard left silently.

The door locked again.

But this time, Sarah smiled.

Because she had noticed something.

The guard didn’t look confident.

He looked nervous.

That meant Julian wasn’t as powerful as he wanted everyone to believe.

And nervous people made mistakes.

Sarah waited.

Two hours.

Three hours.

Four.

She counted every sound.

The footsteps outside.

The changing guards.

The movement downstairs.

Julian thought locking her away made her powerless.

He forgot something.

Her father raised her differently.

Richard Sterling had not raised a billionaire’s daughter.

He had raised a survivor.

When Sarah was sixteen, her father took her to his first company meeting.

She remembered complaining.

"Dad, everyone there is twice my age."

Richard smiled.

"Good."

She frowned.

"Good?"

"The room will teach you more than any classroom ever could."

Then he gave her advice she never forgot.

"Never underestimate someone because they think they already won."

At the time, she thought he was talking about business.

Now she understood.

He was preparing her for this.

At 4:17 a.m., Sarah heard something.

A small noise.

A click.

She looked toward the window.

A tiny flash appeared near the security panel.

Then the lock on her door opened.

Sarah froze.

The door slowly moved.

Standing outside was someone she never expected.

Marcus Hale.

Julian’s head of security.

For three years, Marcus had barely spoken to her.

He was always professional.

Always distant.

But now his face looked serious.

“You have ten minutes.”

Sarah stared.

“Why are you helping me?”

Marcus looked down the hallway.

“Because your father once saved my life.”

That caught her attention.

“My father?”

Marcus nodded.

“Richard Sterling knew people were coming after him.”

Sarah’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?”

Marcus handed her a small black drive.

“He left instructions.”

Sarah took it slowly.

“Instructions for who?”

Marcus looked directly at her.

“For the person he trusted most.”

Her fingers tightened around the drive.

“Me?”

“He hoped it would be you.”

A strange feeling moved through her.

Fear.

Hope.

Confusion.

All at once.

“What is this?”

“Evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Your husband’s betrayal.”

Sarah stared at the drive.

The storm outside suddenly sounded louder.

“How long have you known?”

“Long enough to know Julian isn’t the man you think he is.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Marcus looked away.

“Because your father ordered me not to.”

Sarah froze.

“My father knew?”

Marcus nodded.

“He knew Julian was getting close to the company.”

Her breathing became heavier.

“No…”

“Yes.”

Marcus looked at her sadly.

“Your father suspected everyone around him.”

“Even Julian?”

“Especially Julian.”

Sarah felt the world shifting.

Her father had known.

He knew something was wrong.

And he left her a warning.

A warning she never received.

“Where is the rest?”

Marcus glanced toward the hallway.

“There’s a hidden archive beneath Sterling Technologies headquarters.”

Sarah’s eyes narrowed.

“Why didn’t Julian find it?”

“Because your father designed it.”

A faint smile appeared on Marcus’ face.

“Julian understands money.”

He looked at Sarah.

“Your father understood people.”

Another sound echoed downstairs.

Marcus immediately became alert.

“They’re coming.”

Sarah looked at him.

“Who?”

“Julian.”

Her heart tightened.

“How long?”

“Minutes.”

Marcus pointed toward the window.

“The storm damaged the east security system. You can climb down.”

Sarah looked outside.

Three floors.

Rain pouring.

Wind violently shaking the trees.

“You’re joking.”

“No.”

Marcus handed her a small backpack.

Inside were clothes, cash, and a phone.

“You need to disappear before sunrise.”

Sarah looked at him.

“And you?”

Marcus stepped back.

“I was never here.”

She hesitated.

“Marcus.”

He stopped.

“Thank you.”

For the first time, his expression softened.

“Don’t thank me yet.”

A pause.

“Survive first.”

Sarah climbed out into the storm.

The cold rain immediately soaked through her clothes.

The wind attacked her face.

But she kept moving.

One step.

Then another.

The woman who left that mansion was not the same woman who entered it hours before.

The frightened wife was gone.

The betrayed daughter was gone.

Only Sarah Sterling remained.

And she was angry.

When her feet touched the ground, she looked back at the mansion.

The place where she lost everything.

The lights were still glowing.

Inside, Julian was probably celebrating.

Thinking he had won.

Sarah reached into her pocket and touched the black drive.

A small smile formed.

He had no idea.

None of them did.

Two hours later, Sarah reached the abandoned Sterling family cabin hidden deep in the woods.

It had belonged to her grandfather.

Nobody visited anymore.

Which made it perfect.

She entered, locked the door, and immediately opened the laptop Marcus left behind.

Her hands shook slightly as she inserted the drive.

A folder appeared.

The name made her stop breathing.

"FOR SARAH — IF THEY TURN AGAINST YOU."

Her father’s handwriting.

She stared at the screen.

Then clicked.

A video opened.

Her father appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But still powerful.

Sarah covered her mouth.

“Dad…”

Richard Sterling looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, something happened.”

Sarah’s eyes filled.

Her father continued.

“Someone close to you betrayed you.”

A pause.

“I’m sorry.”

Those two words almost destroyed her.

Because her father never apologized.

Not for anything.

“If Julian Sterling is the reason you’re seeing this…”

Sarah froze.

The video continued.

“Then understand this.”

Richard leaned closer.

“The man you married was never trying to protect you.”

The screen flickered.

Then came the words that changed everything.

“He was trying to inherit you.”

Sarah sat frozen.

The storm continued outside.

But inside that cabin, a new war had begun.

Her father had left her more than evidence.

He had left her a mission.

A way to destroy everyone who tried to destroy her.

And at the bottom of the file was one final message:

"Trust no Sterling. Find Victor Cross."

Sarah whispered the name.

Victor Cross.

The one man her family hated.

The billionaire rival who had spent years fighting against the Sterling empire.

The man Julian always warned her about.

"Stay away from Victor Cross. He's dangerous."

Sarah looked at the screen.

Then smiled coldly.

Maybe dangerous was exactly what she needed.

Across the city, inside the Sterling mansion, Julian poured champagne.

Eleanor sat beside him.

“To your future,” she said.

Julian smiled.

“To Sterling Technologies.”

They laughed.

They believed Sarah was gone.

They believed the company was theirs.

Then Julian’s phone rang.

His smile disappeared.

“What?”

The voice on the other end was panicked.

“Sir… there’s a problem.”

“What problem?”

A pause.

Then:

“Sarah escaped.”

The glass in Julian’s hand stopped moving.

Eleanor stood.

“What did you say?”

Julian slowly looked toward the storm outside.

For the first time that night…

Fear appeared on his face.

Because he knew Sarah.

Or at least, he thought he did.

May you like

And if she had survived…

Everything they built could collapse.
