CHAPTER 7: THE TRUE ENEMY — THE PERSON WHO CONTROLLED THE STERLING FAMILY FROM THE SHADOWS

CHAPTER 7: THE TRUE ENEMY — THE PERSON WHO CONTROLLED THE STERLING FAMILY FROM THE SHADOWS

Sarah Sterling had always believed betrayal had a face.

First, it was Julian.

The husband who whispered promises while secretly planning to steal everything she inherited.

Then Eleanor.

The woman who smiled at family dinners while preparing to destroy Sarah’s reputation.

But after watching the hidden recording from her father…

Sarah realized something terrifying.

She had been looking at the wrong enemies.

Julian was a traitor.

Eleanor was a manipulator.

But someone else had been moving the pieces long before Sarah ever entered the game.

Someone who understood power.

Someone who understood secrets.

Someone who had been hiding in plain sight.

The morning after discovering the video, Sarah didn't sleep.

She sat in Victor Cross's private office, surrounded by documents scattered across the table.

For hours, she replayed the recording.

Again.

And again.

Her father's face.

Julian beside him.

The warning.

The mystery.

Nothing made sense.

Victor entered quietly.

He stopped when he saw her.

“You haven't slept.”

Sarah didn't look up.

“Neither have you.”

A small silence.

Then Victor placed a coffee on the table.

“You should rest.”

She almost laughed.

“Rest?”

She pointed at the screen.

“My dead father left me a secret project.”

She pointed at the files.

“My husband knew about it.”

Then she looked at Victor.

“And the one person I trusted may have known more than he admitted.”

Victor accepted the accusation.

“I understand.”

“No, you don't.”

Her voice was calm, but there was pain underneath.

“You know what hurts the most?”

Victor didn't answer.

“I spent three years wondering if I was a bad wife.”

Sarah looked away.

“I thought Julian was unhappy because I wasn't enough.”

Her fingers tightened.

“But the truth is…”

A pause.

“I was surrounded by people who were pretending.”

Victor looked at her.

“Sarah.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I need to figure this out myself.”

Sarah returned to Sterling Technologies that afternoon.

Not secretly.

Not hiding.

She walked through the front doors like she owned the building.

Because she did.

Employees stopped talking when they saw her.

Some looked embarrassed.

Some looked afraid.

Some looked relieved.

Everyone had watched the scandal.

Everyone had seen the headlines.

But now they saw something different.

Confidence.

The woman who entered the building wasn't the woman who left three weeks ago.

At the elevator, an old employee approached.

“Miss Sterling?”

Sarah turned.

The man was Robert Hayes.

Her father's former chief engineer.

She remembered him from childhood.

“You knew my father.”

Robert smiled sadly.

“I did.”

“Then you know about Project Aether.”

The color drained from his face.

That reaction told Sarah everything.

“You do.”

Robert looked around.

“Not here.”

Ten minutes later, they sat inside a private conference room.

Robert closed the door.

“I was hoping you would never have to find out.”

Sarah stared at him.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Her voice hardened.

“But nobody tells me anything.”

Robert lowered his eyes.

“Your father wanted to protect you.”

“From what?”

Robert hesitated.

“From the war inside your own family.”

Sarah leaned forward.

“Tell me the truth.”

The older man sighed.

“Project Aether wasn't just a technology project.”

“What was it?”

“It was an insurance policy.”

Sarah frowned.

“Against who?”

Robert looked at her.

“Against the people who wanted Sterling Technologies.”

Robert explained.

Years ago, Richard Sterling discovered something dangerous.

The company's success attracted powerful people.

Investors.

Politicians.

Competitors.

But the greatest threat came from inside.

The Sterling family itself.

“Your father discovered financial irregularities.”

Sarah's eyes narrowed.

“Julian?”

Robert shook his head.

“No.”

That surprised her.

“Then who?”

Robert looked toward the door.

As if afraid someone might hear.

“Henry Sterling.”

Julian's father.

Sarah froze.

“But he's dead.”

“Yes.”

Robert's voice became quiet.

“But before he died, he built something.”

“What?”

“A network.”

Sarah listened carefully.

“A group of people loyal to him. Executives, lawyers, investors.”

Robert looked at her.

“People who could control Sterling Technologies without owning it.”

A chill moved through her.

“So Julian inherited that network?”

Robert nodded.

“Exactly.”

Sarah returned to Victor with the information.

But before she could speak, Victor already knew something was wrong.

“What happened?”

She placed the documents on the table.

“Henry Sterling.”

Victor's expression changed.

“What about him?”

“He built a hidden organization inside Sterling Technologies.”

Victor became silent.

Sarah noticed.

“You knew.”

Victor looked away.

“I suspected.”

Her anger returned.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I wasn't sure.”

“You keep saying that.”

Sarah stood.

“Everyone around me has information. Everyone has secrets.”

Victor looked at her.

“You think I enjoy hiding things from you?”

“I think everyone does what they believe is best for themselves.”

That sentence hurt him.

But he didn't argue.

Instead, he said something unexpected.

“You're right.”

Sarah stopped.

Victor continued.

“I made mistakes.”

A pause.

“But unlike Julian…”

His eyes met hers.

“I never planned to own you.”

The words surprised her.

Because she knew they were true.

That night, Sarah received an anonymous package.

No sender.

No address.

Inside was a photograph.

A recent photograph.

Someone standing outside Sterling Technologies.

Sarah stared.

Because she recognized the person.

Julian.

But that wasn't what shocked her.

It was the person standing beside him.

A woman.

An older woman.

Someone Sarah knew.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.

Sarah immediately called Victor.

He answered after one ring.

“What happened?”

“I know who has been controlling Julian.”

A pause.

“Who?”

Sarah looked at the photograph again.

Her voice became quiet.

“My husband's mother.”

Silence.

Victor responded slowly.

“Eleanor?”

Sarah shook her head.

“No.”

She looked closer.

“This isn't Eleanor.”

A pause.

“It's Julian's real mother.”

Victor became silent.

Because everyone believed Julian's mother died when he was young.

Sarah continued:

“Victor…”

Her voice trembled slightly.

“Someone has been pretending to be dead for twenty years.”

An hour later, they investigated old records.

And what they found changed everything.

Julian's family history had been altered.

Birth certificates.

Medical records.

Company documents.

Someone had erased a woman from history.

Her name was:

Victoria Sterling.

Henry Sterling's first wife.

Julian's biological mother.

And according to the records…

She wasn't dead.

She had disappeared.

The next morning, Sarah received a call.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A woman's voice spoke.

“Sarah Sterling.”

Sarah froze.

“Who is this?”

The woman laughed softly.

“You've been searching for me.”

Sarah stood.

“Victoria?”

Silence.

Then:

“Good.”

The woman's voice was calm.

“You finally learned how to ask the right questions.”

Sarah tightened her grip on the phone.

“Why did you contact me?”

“Because you have something I need.”

“What?”

“Project Aether.”

Sarah's expression changed.

“How do you know about that?”

The woman laughed.

“Because, Sarah…”

A pause.

“I helped your father create it.”

Sarah froze.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

The woman's voice became colder.

“What's impossible is believing Richard Sterling was the hero everyone thought he was.”

Sarah felt a chill.

“What are you saying?”

The woman answered:

“Your father didn't hide Project Aether from enemies.”

A pause.

“He hid it because he knew what he created.”

The call ended.

Sarah stood silently.

Victor looked at her.

“What did she say?”

Sarah slowly lowered the phone.

“She said my father wasn't protecting the world from the enemy.”

Her eyes filled with confusion.

“He was protecting the world from himself.”

For the first time since everything began...

Sarah questioned the one person she had always trusted.

Her father.

Maybe Richard Sterling wasn't only a victim.

Maybe he had secrets too.

And maybe the biggest betrayal of her life...

Wasn't from Julian.

May you like

Wasn't from Eleanor.

Maybe it was the truth about the man who taught her never to trust anyone.
