CHAPTER 6: THE BETRAYAL WITHIN — THE SECRET VICTOR CROSS HID FROM SARAH

CHAPTER 6: THE BETRAYAL WITHIN — THE SECRET VICTOR CROSS HID FROM SARAH

The screen went black.

But Sarah couldn't move.

She stood alone in the underground facility beneath Sterling Technologies, surrounded by darkness and silence.

Yet the only thing she could hear was her father's voice repeating in her mind.

"Do not trust Victor Cross."

The words felt impossible.

Wrong.

Victor had saved her.

He had helped her escape.

He had given her the tools to expose Julian and Eleanor.

He was the only person who believed her when the entire world turned against her.

But Richard Sterling had never been a careless man.

Her father had spent his entire life predicting threats before they happened.

If he left a warning...

There had to be a reason.

Sarah slowly looked around the abandoned facility.

For the first time since meeting Victor, doubt entered her mind.

And doubt was dangerous.

Because doubt forced her to question everything.

The elevator doors opened.

Victor stepped out.

His expression immediately changed when he saw Sarah's face.

“What happened?”

She didn't answer.

Victor walked closer.

“Sarah?”

She held up the tablet.

On the screen was the recording.

Her father's message.

Victor watched.

And for the first time...

Sarah saw fear.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“You knew.”

Victor became silent.

That silence was enough.

Sarah's heart sank.

“You knew he would say that.”

Victor looked away.

“Sarah…”

“No.”

Her voice sharpened.

“Answer me.”

A long pause.

Then Victor finally spoke.

“Yes.”

The word hit harder than any confession.

Sarah stepped back.

“How?”

Victor took a breath.

“Because I was there when he recorded it.”

The room became completely silent.

Sarah stared at him.

“You were there?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The night before he died.”

Her face changed.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Victor looked at her.

“Because your father asked me not to.”

Sarah laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

She shook her head.

“My father asked me to trust people. My husband asked me to trust him. And now you tell me everyone had secrets.”

Victor's expression softened.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“No.”

Sarah's voice cracked.

“You were controlling information.”

That sentence hurt him.

She noticed.

But she didn't stop.

“Just like Julian.”

Victor's eyes changed.

A small flash of pain appeared.

Then disappeared.

“You really think I'm like him?”

Sarah looked away.

“I don't know anymore.”

Victor didn't defend himself.

That surprised her.

She expected anger.

Denial.

Excuses.

Instead, he simply said:

“Your father didn't trust me completely either.”

Sarah looked at him.

“What?”

Victor reached into his jacket and pulled out an old envelope.

“He gave me this the same night.”

Sarah stared.

“Why didn't you show me?”

“Because I wasn't supposed to.”

She took the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

Her father.

Victor.

And another man.

A man Sarah recognized immediately.

Her breath stopped.

“That's…”

Victor nodded.

“Julian's father.”

Richard Sterling.

Victor Cross.

And Henry Sterling.

Three men connected by a secret Sarah had never known.

She looked at Victor.

“What is this?”

“Before our families became enemies, we were partners.”

Sarah frowned.

“My father and Julian's father worked together?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did everyone say your families hated each other?”

“Because something happened.”

“What?”

Victor's jaw tightened.

“A betrayal.”

Ten years earlier.

Before Sarah inherited anything.

Before Julian entered her life.

Before Victor became one of America's most powerful businessmen.

Richard Sterling and Henry Sterling had created a technology partnership.

Together, they developed early artificial intelligence systems that would eventually become the foundation of Sterling Technologies.

But then something happened.

The company records changed.

Patents disappeared.

Money moved.

And Victor's father was blamed.

“My father was accused of stealing from Richard,” Victor explained.

Sarah listened silently.

“But he didn't.”

“No.”

Victor looked at the photograph.

“Henry Sterling framed him.”

Sarah's eyes widened.

“Julian's father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard wanted to end their partnership.”

Sarah looked confused.

“Why?”

Victor hesitated.

“Because Richard discovered Henry was dangerous.”

The words echoed.

Dangerous.

The same word her father used in his message.

Sarah looked at the photograph again.

“Then why did my father warn me about you?”

Victor was silent.

Too silent.

“Victor.”

Finally, he answered.

“Because your father was protecting you from everyone.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does.”

He stepped closer.

“Sarah, your father knew Henry Sterling had created enemies everywhere.”

“But Henry is dead.”

“Yes.”

“And Julian?”

Victor looked at her.

“Julian inherited more than money.”

A chill moved through her.

“What does that mean?”

“It means some people inherit their family's ambition.”

A pause.

“And some inherit their family's darkness.”

Sarah returned to the hidden files.

She searched deeper.

Folders appeared.

Most were encrypted.

But one caught her attention.

PROJECT AETHER — SUCCESSION PLAN

She opened it.

Inside was a list of names.

Executives.

Investors.

Scientists.

Partners.

Then she saw something that made her freeze.

A name.

Victor Cross.

Her heart dropped.

She looked at him.

“You're listed here.”

Victor didn't answer.

“What does this mean?”

“I don't know.”

“You don't know?”

“No.”

Sarah pointed at the screen.

“My father included you in his secret project.”

Victor stepped closer.

“Let me see.”

She moved the laptop away.

“No.”

The word surprised both of them.

Because Sarah realized something.

She was afraid.

Not of Victor.

Of being wrong again.

Meanwhile, Julian was discovering his own nightmare.

After the gala disaster, his board members demanded answers.

His investors threatened lawsuits.

His control over Sterling Technologies was collapsing.

But then he received a message.

A private message.

No number.

No identity.

Only a location.

And three words:

"I know everything."

Julian arrived at an abandoned office building downtown.

Inside, a man waited.

Julian stopped when he saw him.

“You.”

The man smiled.

“Miss me?”

Julian's face changed.

“You're supposed to be dead.”

The man laughed.

“That's what your father wanted everyone to believe.”

Julian stepped back.

“What do you want?”

The man placed a folder on the table.

“I want my company back.”

Julian looked at the folder.

“What company?”

The man's smile disappeared.

“The one your family stole.”

Back at Cross Tower, Sarah couldn't sleep.

Every answer created more questions.

Her father knew.

Victor knew.

Julian knew something.

Everyone seemed to have pieces of the truth.

Everyone except her.

At 3:00 a.m., Sarah opened the final hidden file.

A video appeared.

Her father again.

But this time...

He wasn't alone.

Someone was sitting beside him.

Sarah leaned closer.

Then froze.

Because the person beside her father was someone she thought she knew.

Someone she trusted.

Someone who had been part of her life for years.

The video began.

Richard Sterling looked into the camera.

“If you’re seeing this, Sarah…”

A pause.

“Then you already know Victor Cross is involved.”

Sarah's breathing stopped.

Her father's voice continued.

“But you also need to know something else.”

The camera moved slightly.

Revealing the person beside him.

And Sarah whispered:

“No…”

Because sitting beside Richard Sterling was—

Julian Sterling.

Her husband.

Alive.

Working with her father.

Before his betrayal.

The recording continued.

“Julian knows the truth about Project Aether.”

Sarah stared.

Unable to understand.

Then her father's final words appeared.

"The person who betrayed you today may not be the person who betrayed me."

The screen went dark.

Sarah sat frozen.

Because suddenly everything changed.

Maybe Julian wasn't the beginning of the betrayal.

Maybe he was only a piece of something much bigger.

May you like

And somewhere in the shadows...

The real enemy was still watching.
