Chapter 15 - The Pocket Nobody Found.

Nobody spoke while Maria carried Lucy back downstairs.

David remained in Emily's bedroom holding the torn rabbit.

The second seam was almost invisible.

It ran beneath the stitched edge of the left foot where the fabric changed from pink to white.

Natalie moved closer.

"Hale's photograph showed only one capsule."

David looked at her.

"Stay back."

She stopped immediately.

Rachel put on a fresh pair of gloves.

"Let me open it."

David handed her the toy.

She used a small pair of manicure scissors from Emily's dressing table to loosen two old stitches without damaging the fabric.

A tiny folded piece of waxed paper slid into her palm.

Grant inhaled sharply.

Natalie whispered, "He never knew."

Rachel unfolded the paper.

Inside was a miniature memory card.

No label.

No serial number.

No blue ring.

David stared at it.

Emily had built a decoy inside a decoy.

The brass capsule had been meant to be found.

The real evidence had stayed inside the rabbit.

"We do not put that into any networked computer," Rachel said.

Owen nodded.

"I have an isolated forensic laptop in the security office."

Grant stepped forward.

"If that's what I think it is, make copies before you open anything."

David looked at him.

"You are not giving instructions."

"David, listen to me."

"I listened to you for twelve years."

Grant stopped.

David saw hurt in his face and did not care.

They took the card downstairs.

Owen disconnected the forensic laptop from every network and disabled its wireless hardware.

Rachel inserted the memory card through an adapter.

A single encrypted archive appeared.

Its name was simple.

E.C.W.

Emily Claire Walker.

David sat down.

Rachel clicked the file.

A password prompt appeared.

Grant leaned over her shoulder.

"Try Lucy's birthday."

"No," David said.

Emily never used obvious passwords.

She used private jokes.

Half-finished lines from books.

Odd details from ordinary days.

David looked at the pink rabbit.

Emily had bought it at a roadside shop during a trip to Vermont when Lucy was six months old.

The shop owner had accidentally charged them for two rabbits.

Emily had laughed all the way back to the hotel.

She kept repeating the amount because it was absurdly high for a stuffed toy.

Forty-seven dollars and eighteen cents.

David typed 4718.

The archive opened.

Rachel looked at him.

"How did you know?"

"Emily would have laughed at me if I forgot."

The archive contained dozens of folders.

Bank records.

Trust revisions.

Email exports.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

And a folder labeled IF DAVID FINDS THIS.

David's hand hovered over the trackpad.

Natalie spoke quietly behind him.

"Open that first."

David turned.

"Why?"

Her eyes were wet.

"Because if Emily left you a message, you deserve to hear it before the lawyers turn her into evidence."

For once, David agreed with her.

He opened the folder.

There was one video file.

The date was two days before Emily's death.

David clicked play.

Emily appeared on the screen sitting in the hidden basement room.

Her hair was pulled back.

She looked tired.

She also looked directly into the camera with the calm focus David remembered from every difficult conversation they had ever shared.

"David," she began.

His throat closed.

Nobody else in the room moved.

"If you're watching this, then I ran out of time or I lost control of the evidence."

David covered his mouth with one hand.

Emily continued.

"First, Lucy is not the reason any of this happened, and I need you to remember that when people try to make her the center of their story."

David looked at the torn rabbit beside the laptop.

"Second, Grant is not stealing from us."

Every person in the room turned toward Grant.

Grant closed his eyes.

David stared at the screen.

Emily continued.

"Grant has been helping me trace the transfers."

David looked at his oldest friend.

Grant did not look relieved.

He looked devastated.

"Why didn't you tell me?" David whispered.

The video could not answer him.

Emily kept speaking.

"He agreed to let Hale believe he was willing to join him."

Rachel sat back slowly.

Natalie's face changed.

"Then Grant was telling the truth," she said.

David ignored her.

Emily's image paused briefly as if she were choosing her next words.

"The person I am afraid of is Jonathan Hale."

The room became perfectly silent.

"Hale has altered trust documents, created hidden accounts, and used private family information to pressure people into helping him."

David felt years of memories with Hale collapse one by one.

"But money is not the whole reason."

Emily leaned closer to the camera.

"Hale believes something in the Walker trust belongs to him."

The video flickered.

"And if he learns what I found in the original birth records, he will come after Natalie too."

Natalie took one step backward.

David turned toward her.

"What birth records?"

Natalie looked terrified.

The video continued.

"David, Natalie Mercer is not who Hale told her she is."

Natalie's hand flew to her mouth.

Emily's next sentence shattered the last assumption in the room.

May you like

"Jonathan Hale is Natalie's father."
