Chapter 18 - The Man at the Gate.

Hale was still at the gate when David returned after dark.
He stood beside a black sedan under the bright security lights wearing the same gray suit he had worn the day before.
The court officer had already left after Dana confirmed that Hale's emergency motion did not authorize entry into the residence.
Hale remained anyway.
David got out of the car before it reached the garage.
Rachel followed him.
Natalie stayed inside for several seconds, then opened her door and stepped out.
Hale saw her and smiled faintly.
"There you are."
Natalie stopped beside David.
"Don't call me that way."
"What way?"
"Like you have any right to sound relieved."
Hale looked at David.
"You told her."
David shook his head.
"Emily did."
For the first time, Hale's confidence visibly failed.
"You found the second file."
Rachel answered.
"We found more than one."
Hale's eyes moved toward the mansion.
"Then you should understand why this has to be handled privately."
David almost smiled.
"You forged my signature, manipulated a guardianship filing, used Natalie to get close to my family, and tried to take control of my trust."
"There is nothing private left."
Hale's jaw tightened.
"You are simplifying events you do not understand."
"Then explain them."
Hale looked toward the security cameras.
"Not here."
Natalie laughed.
"You spent years teaching me that cameras were useful when other people forgot about them."
"Natalie."
"No."
She stepped closer to the gate.
"Did you put those accounts in my name?"
Hale did not answer.
"Did you?"
"The accounts protected assets that would otherwise have been lost."
Natalie's face hardened.
"That is a yes."
"You benefited from those assets."
"I didn't know they existed."
"You benefited from my protection your entire life."
Natalie stared at him.
"You mean control."
Hale's expression changed.
"Thomas Mercer gave you a comfortable childhood because I made sure he could."
Evelyn's voice came from behind David.
"Thomas gave her a childhood because he loved her."
Hale looked toward Evelyn with open dislike.
She had come down the drive with Owen.
"You were always sentimental," Hale said.
"And you were always convinced resentment was the same thing as entitlement."
Hale's eyes sharpened.
"My father built the legal structure that made the Walker fortune possible."
"Your father was paid for his work."
"He was promised equity."
"He claimed he was promised equity."
Hale's voice rose.
"David's grandfather used him and discarded him."
David looked at Hale.
"So you spent thirty years taking what you decided he was owed."
"I corrected an old theft."
Rachel spoke quietly.
"By creating new ones."
Hale looked at her.
"Be careful, Rachel."
She smiled without warmth.
"That sentence worked better when you were my boss."
David noticed movement inside the gatehouse.
Owen had positioned a recording device near the intercom panel.
Hale seemed not to care.
Maybe he believed his explanations sounded reasonable.
That was the frightening part.
"Did you cause Emily's accident?" David asked.
Everything stopped.
Hale looked at him for a long moment.
"No."
"Did you know she was driving that night?"
"Yes."
"Did you speak to her?"
Hale looked away.
David's pulse hammered.
"Did you speak to my wife before her car went off that road?"
"She called me."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"What did you say to her?" David asked.
Hale's voice became quieter.
"I told her that if she released incomplete accusations, she would damage your company and your family."
"Did you threaten Lucy?"
"No."
"Did you threaten Emily?"
"No."
"Then why was she frightened of you?"
Hale's composure cracked.
"Because she had convinced herself I was a monster."
Natalie spoke.
"You sent me after her."
"To talk to her."
"You sent Grant into her office."
Grant's voice came from the driveway behind them.
"You sent me because you thought I would help you."
Hale turned.
Grant walked toward the gate holding a folder.
"And I let you think that because Emily asked me to."
Hale's face became unreadable.
Grant held up the folder.
"The North Star records are already with outside investigators."
Hale's eyes moved to Natalie.
"You opened the Boston box."
Natalie met his stare.
"Yes."
"After everything I gave you."
"You gave me a lie and put your money in my name."
"I gave you a future."
Natalie's voice became steady.
"No."
"You gave me a role."
David thought of the yellow gown in the bright hallway.
Natalie had played that role until the moment Lucy bit her and the performance broke.
What happened next belonged to Natalie, not Hale.
That distinction mattered.
David stepped toward the gate.
"You are never entering this property again."
Hale smiled faintly.
"You think this property is yours?"
David frowned.
"What is that supposed to mean?"
Hale looked almost pleased to have one secret left.
"Ask Emily's deed."
Then two unmarked government vehicles turned into the road behind Hale's sedan.
Rachel looked toward David.
"That was faster than I expected."
The outside financial investigator named in Emily's letter stepped from the first vehicle.
Hale's face finally lost all color.
He did not run.
He did not argue.
He simply looked at Natalie as two investigators approached him.
"You could have had everything," he said.
Natalie shook her head.
"Not if it came from you."
Hale was escorted away for questioning while the investigators secured records connected to the trust inquiry.
David watched the sedan leave.
He expected relief.
Instead he felt tired.
Lucy was waiting inside.
That was the only thing he wanted to think about.
As he turned toward the house, Rachel caught his arm.
"David."
"What?"
She held the original deed from Boston.
"Hale was trying to tell you something."
"Hale was trying to get one last reaction."
"Maybe."
Rachel pointed to the ownership line on the deed.
David read it.
Then he read it again.
Walker House was not owned by David Walker.
It was not owned by Walker Holdings.
And it was not owned by the family trust.
May you like
The legal owner was Lucy Emily Walker.
