Chapter 17 - The Deed in Boston.

They left for Boston before sunrise the next morning.

David did not want Natalie in the car.

Rachel insisted that if the archive required Natalie's identification, refusing to bring her could cost them time they no longer had.

Lucy stayed at Walker House with Evelyn, Maria, and Dana Ellis under the court's temporary supervision plan.

David hated leaving her again.

He knelt beside her before dawn and promised he would be home before bedtime.

Lucy held the repaired pink rabbit against her chest.

Maria had closed the torn seam loosely so the toy looked less damaged.

"Bunny stay," Lucy said.

"Bunny stays with you."

David kissed her forehead.

"And Daddy comes back."

Lucy considered this seriously.

"Daddy back."

"Always."

In the car, Natalie sat beside Rachel while David watched gray morning light spread across the highway.

Grant traveled separately with Owen.

No one spoke for the first hour.

Then David asked the question he had been avoiding.

"What did Emily write after that first sentence?"

Natalie looked out the window.

"She told me Hale would eventually ask me to choose between the truth and the life he promised me."

"What life?"

"Money, access, status, a family name people respected."

David's voice stayed flat.

"And me?"

Natalie turned toward him.

"You were not part of the promise at first."

"At first."

"I was supposed to attend the museum fundraiser, meet you once, and create enough familiarity that I could enter Walker events without looking suspicious."

"Then why did you keep seeing me?"

Natalie took a long breath.

"Because you called me."

"And you could have said no."

"Yes."

"But you didn't."

"No."

David stared through the windshield.

"Was any of it real?"

Rachel looked down at her notes, clearly wishing she were somewhere else.

Natalie answered anyway.

"Yes."

David laughed quietly.

"That's convenient."

"I know how it sounds."

"You were lying from the day we met."

"About why I was there, yes."

"That is not a small lie."

"I didn't say it was."

David turned toward her.

"You put your hands on Lucy."

Natalie closed her eyes.

"That is the part I cannot explain away."

"Good."

"I panicked."

"She was two."

"I know."

"Stop saying you know."

Natalie opened her eyes.

"Then tell me what you want me to say."

David's voice dropped.

"Nothing."

"I want you to remember it."

Natalie nodded.

"I will."

The private archive occupied the lower level of an old bank building near Beacon Hill.

The manager recognized Natalie from her earlier visit.

He asked for identification and a handwritten authorization code.

Natalie gave him both.

David watched every movement.

The manager returned with a long gray document box.

"This was deposited by Emily Claire Walker," he said.

"Release instructions list Natalie Mercer as the only secondary viewer."

David looked at Natalie.

"Emily gave you access?"

Natalie seemed equally surprised.

"I didn't know."

The manager opened a private reading room and left them alone.

Inside the box were three documents and one sealed envelope.

The first document was the original deed to Walker House.

The second was a copy of the original family trust.

The third was a handwritten ledger showing a sequence of numbers beside dates.

Rachel compared the trust language with Evelyn's copy.

"This is the real Schedule C."

David read it.

The language matched Evelyn's petition.

If Lucy ceased to occupy the house during her minority, the property and attached voting rights would enter court-supervised preservation.

No transfer to Grant.

No transfer to Natalie.

No automatic board control.

Hale's later versions were false.

Rachel turned to the deed.

"Emily said the archive location was hidden here."

They searched the document line by line.

Near the final page was a handwritten notation beside the legal description.

NORTH STAR - 4718 - E.C.W.

David recognized the number.

"Forty-seven eighteen."

Natalie looked at him.

"The rabbit price."

Rachel pointed to NORTH STAR.

"Could be the archive name."

David opened Emily's sealed envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Natalie, if you are reading this, you chose to open the box instead of taking it to Hale unopened.

That means I was right to give you one chance.

Natalie sat down.

David continued reading silently before handing the page to her.

Emily had written that Natalie was not responsible for the circumstances of her birth or for Hale's decisions.

She had also written that being manipulated did not excuse manipulating others.

Natalie's eyes filled with tears.

The final paragraph contained an instruction.

Use the microSD key with the North Star archive and send the complete package to three independent recipients listed on the back of this page.

Rachel turned the page over.

The recipients were a federal financial investigator, an outside trust auditor, and a retired judge who had helped create the original Walker family trust.

Grant arrived with Owen and read the instructions.

"Emily built redundancy."

David nodded.

"Because she knew one person could be compromised."

They used an isolated terminal provided by the archive facility.

The microSD key unlocked a protected storage directory labeled NORTH STAR.

Hundreds of original transaction records appeared.

Rachel's expression changed as she reviewed them.

"This is enough to authenticate the transfers."

Grant leaned closer.

"And enough to show Hale created the destination accounts."

Natalie stared at one record.

Her hidden birth name appeared beside an account she had never seen.

"He planned to leave me holding this."

Rachel nodded.

"If the scheme collapsed, your name was positioned to take the blame."

Natalie covered her face.

David felt no satisfaction watching her discover the full extent of Hale's betrayal.

He also felt no urge to comfort her.

Two truths could exist at once.

Natalie had been used.

Natalie had also frightened Lucy.

Rachel sent the archive package to all three recipients exactly as Emily instructed.

Then she made several encrypted evidence copies.

David's phone rang before they left the building.

It was Dana Ellis.

"Mr. Walker, I need you to remain calm."

David's entire body tensed.

"What happened to Lucy?"

"Lucy is safe."

"Then why are you calling?"

Dana hesitated.

"Jonathan Hale arrived at Walker House with a court officer."

David stared at Rachel.

"For what?"

"He has filed an emergency motion claiming Evelyn Mercer obtained guardianship through fraud."

"Hale is not even Lucy's attorney."

"No, but he is claiming standing as counsel to the trust."

David's voice hardened.

"Do not let him near my daughter."

"He is not near her."

"Where is he now?"

"Outside the front gate."

Dana paused.

May you like

"And he says he will stay there until you return."
