The bullet passed through my shoulder.
Painful.
Not fatal.
Claire was charged before sunrise.
Marcus tried to negotiate immediately.
The network began collapsing within forty-eight hours.
Nine arrests became fourteen.
Then twenty-three.
Children were located in four states.
Families were investigated.
Documents were seized.
But Claire’s last sentence stayed inside my head.
Ask Mara what she hasn’t told you.
Mara avoided me for two days.
Finally, I confronted her at the hospital.
“What was she talking about?”
Mara looked toward Lily’s room.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“Then tell me now.”
She began crying.
“Elena wasn’t the only surrogate.”
My stomach turned.
“What?”
Mara handed me an envelope.
Inside were medical documents.
Caleb’s name appeared on the first page.
Biological Mother.
MARA BENNETT.
I stared at her.
“No.”
She wiped her eyes.
“Claire couldn’t carry children.”
“I know.”
“She hired me before you ever met me.”
The room felt unreal.
“You carried Caleb?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
“Because Claire paid for everything privately.”
“She forged your authorization again.”
My legs weakened.
Mara continued.
“After Caleb died, she told me it was natural.”
“I believed her.”
“Then she hired me as your nanny because she said you were grieving.”
“I thought staying close might help.”
My eyes burned.
Mara’s voice broke.
“I loved him too.”
For years, I thought Mara stayed with our family because she was loyal.
She had stayed because she had lost a son.
Our son.
I sat beside her.
Neither of us spoke.
Then Elena entered using a wheelchair.
She placed a hand on her sister’s shoulder.
“Claire used women who needed money.”
Elena looked at me.
“She used all of us.”
Rebecca later confirmed it.
Claire had orchestrated Caleb’s surrogacy.
She had forged my signature.
She had concealed Mara’s identity.
And when Caleb’s health complicated her inheritance timeline, she had convinced Marcus to administer a fatal dose.
My son had not died because his body failed.
