Chapter 19 - The Trial

Claire’s trial began eleven months later.

She entered the courtroom wearing gray.

No designer dress.

No diamonds.

No perfect wife.

She looked smaller.

But not defeated.

Prosecutors presented financial records.

Forged documents.

Hidden cameras.

Burner phones.

Surrogacy contracts.

Medical evidence.

Insurance policies.

The recording from Friday night.

Then Mara testified.

Claire stared at her throughout.

Mara described being tied to the bed.

She described listening to Lily cry over the phone while Claire refused to release her.

She described Caleb.

She described Elena.

She described the twins.

When the defense attorney asked why she stayed silent so long, Mara looked toward Claire.

“Because fear works.”

The courtroom became silent.

“Until it doesn’t.”

Elena testified next.

Then Marcus.

He had accepted a cooperation agreement.

He admitted helping Claire stage medical episodes.

He admitted drugging me in Boston.

He admitted falsifying psychiatric reports.

Then the prosecutor asked about Caleb.

Marcus lowered his head.

“Yes.”

One word.

It destroyed what remained of Claire’s defense.

Claire finally testified against her attorney’s advice.

She blamed Marcus.

She blamed Elena.

She blamed Mara.

She blamed me.

She claimed she had been ignored.

Trapped.

Underappreciated.

Entitled to security.

The prosecutor asked her one final question.

“Did Caleb Whitmore deserve to die?”

Claire stared at the jury.

Then at me.

Her answer ended everything.

“He was never supposed to matter this much.”

Several jurors began crying.

I did not.

I had finished giving Claire my grief.

Three days later, the jury returned.

Guilty.

Conspiracy.

Fraud.

Kidnapping.

Attempted murder.

Child trafficking.

Forgery.

And murder.

Claire received life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

As deputies led her away, she looked back once.

I expected hatred.

Instead, she smiled.

May you like

For years, that smile had controlled rooms.

That day, it meant nothing.
