Chapter 9 - The Bottle

Rebecca identified “Dose D” within twelve hours.

It was not a product name.

It was shorthand Marcus had used in two previous insurance investigations.

A combination of prescription medications capable of causing confusion, aggression, respiratory suppression, and memory loss.

Depending on dosage, a victim might appear intoxicated.

At higher levels, the victim might die.

The empty bottle would carry Mara’s fingerprints.

The story became obvious.

Mara poisons me.

I become violent.

Claire becomes the terrified wife.

An altercation occurs.

I die.

Mara is blamed.

Claire inherits everything.

The children disappear into her custody.

It was elegant.

That made it terrifying.

Rebecca still needed physical evidence.

“We need the bottle.”

“I can get it.”

“No.”

“It’s in my house.”

“And if she sees you searching?”

“She won’t.”

“Daniel.”

“This woman may have killed my son.”

Rebecca stopped arguing.

That evening, I watched Claire carefully.

At six, she prepared formula.

At seven, she changed Ethan.

At eight, she called her sister.

At eight-thirty, she entered the pantry.

She remained inside for forty seconds.

When she emerged, she carried nothing.

I waited.

At midnight, I opened the pantry.

Behind several wine bottles was a loose wooden panel.

Inside sat a small metal box.

The box contained syringes.

Prescription bottles.

A latex glove.

Two passports bearing Claire’s photograph.

Neither used her real name.

There were also birth certificates for Noah and Ethan.

The father listed was me.

The mother was not Claire.

I stared at the documents.

Mother.

ELENA MARLOWE.

I had never heard that name.

The twins had been conceived through fertility treatment.

Claire had carried them.

At least, that was what I had believed.

The documents in my hands suggested something impossible.

Rebecca arrived twenty minutes later disguised as a utility technician.

She photographed everything.

Then she looked at the birth certificates.

“This changes the case.”

“How?”

“If these are legitimate, Claire may not have legal maternity rights.”

“She gave birth to them.”

“Are you certain?”

I opened my mouth.

Then stopped.

During the delivery, I had been called away because of an emergency involving my company.

Claire claimed labor began early.

When I arrived, the twins were already in neonatal care.

For the first time, I realized something horrifying.

I had never actually seen my wife pregnant without clothing.

I had never attended several late-term appointments because she always claimed they had been rescheduled.

And suddenly, the mystery was no longer simply about what Claire intended to do.

It was about who my children truly belonged to.
