CHAPTER 3: WHAT HE DIDN’T EXPECT

CHAPTER 3: WHAT HE DIDN’T EXPECT

Three days later, he showed up at my door.

He looked different.

Not sorry.

Not remorseful.

Confused.

“You’re really taking this seriously?” he asked, leaning against the frame like nothing had happened. “It was a joke. Everyone does cake smashes.”

I stared at him for a long moment.

“I didn’t leave because of the cake.”

His expression tightened.

“Then what? You’re humiliating me over nothing?”

That word again.

Humiliating.

Always the same angle.

Always about him.

I stepped aside and handed him a printed envelope.

He frowned.

“What’s this?”

“Your reality,” I said.

Inside were screenshots, notes, dates.

Patterns.

Things he thought didn’t matter because I never reacted loudly.

His eyes moved across the pages.

Slowly.

Then faster.

The color drained from his face.

“This is insane…” he muttered. “You’ve been collecting this?”

“I’ve been surviving it.”

Silence.

For the first time, he didn’t laugh.

He didn’t joke.

He didn’t dismiss me.

He just stood there… realizing the version of me he had always underestimated was finally done staying quiet.

I closed the door gently.

Not in anger.

Not in hatred.

But in finality.

EPILOGUE: THE WOMAN WHO WALKED AWAY

Weeks later, the divorce was already in motion.

The video of the wedding faded from social media faster than I expected.

People moved on.

They always do.

But I didn’t go back to who I was before him.

I became someone else.

Someone who didn’t mistake disrespect for love.

Someone who didn’t laugh things off just to keep the peace.

One evening, I passed a bakery window displaying a white wedding cake.

Simple. Beautiful. Untouched.

I didn’t feel sadness.

I didn’t feel anger.

Just distance.

And for the first time in a long time…

May you like

peace.
