Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Call

Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Call
The silence inside the Langford ballroom stretched for several unbearable seconds.
No one moved.
No one even dared to breathe.
Helen Langford stared at me as if she had forgotten how.
Then she laughed.
A sharp, nervous laugh.
"You think one phone call scares me?" she said, forcing confidence into her trembling voice. "Do you know how much Langford Group is worth?"
"I do," I replied calmly.
She folded her arms.
"My son owns this company."
"No," I corrected. "He manages it."
The front doors of the ballroom suddenly opened.
Nearly twenty men and women in dark business suits entered in perfect formation. Leading them was my chief legal officer, David Reynolds, carrying a thick leather portfolio.
Every executive in the room recognized him immediately.
David walked directly toward me before stopping respectfully.
"Mrs. Langford—"
He paused and smiled.
"I suppose I should stop using that name."
He turned toward the guests.
"Good evening. I represent Harrington Capital International."
The room erupted into whispers.
Harrington Capital.
One of the largest private investment firms in the world.
David opened the portfolio.
"Forty-eight minutes ago, Harrington Capital completed the purchase of every outstanding debt obligation held against Langford Group. An additional controlling percentage of voting shares has been secured through existing shareholder agreements."
He looked directly at Helen.
"As of six minutes ago..."
He handed me the final document.
"...Miss Eleanor Harrington is now the majority owner of Langford Group."
Gasps echoed across the ballroom.
Helen's knees nearly gave out.
"No..."
She looked at me with horror.
"You..."
"You were Harrington?"
I gently stroked my daughter's hair.
May you like
"I never hid my last name."
"You simply never cared enough to ask."
