A month later, Emily walked into her new kindergarten wearing another white dress.
This time she wasn't afraid.
She smiled.
She laughed.
She even made new friends.
When school ended, she ran into my arms.
"Mommy!"
"I wasn't scared today."
"You weren't?"
She shook her head proudly.
"Because you said nobody can hurt me anymore."
I knelt beside her.
"I meant every word."
She wrapped her tiny arms around my neck.
"Grandma can't come back?"
"No."
"Ever?"
"Never."
Daniel joined us, holding three ice cream cones.
"Our princess deserves a celebration."
Emily giggled.
"For what?"
"For being the bravest little girl I've ever known."
She smiled so brightly that every painful memory seemed just a little farther away.
