Chapter 12: The Breaking Point

Julian arrived twenty minutes later, his car skidding to a halt on the wet gravel. He sprinted through the front doors, panic etching deep lines into his face. When he saw Mara sitting calmly on the sofa in the living room, a cup of tea in her hand, he dropped to his knees in front of her, burying his face in her lap.

"I’m fine," she soothed, running her fingers through his damp, wavy hair. "Julian, I’m perfectly fine."

"I am never leaving you alone again," he swore, his voice trembling. "Never."

As he pulled back to kiss her, Mara suddenly gasped, her fingers digging into his shoulders. A sharp, undeniable pain ripped through her lower abdomen, followed by a sudden rush of warmth.

She looked at Julian, her eyes wide. "Julian... the baby."

His panic instantly vanished, replaced by the sheer, focused readiness she had seen in the ballroom weeks ago. "Okay," he said, standing up and lifting her into his arms. "Let’s go meet our child."
