Chapter 15: Epilogue
One year later.
The Carroway Reading Room was bathed in warm, golden light. It smelled of old paper, polished leather, and fresh lilies. Mara stood at the head of the long oak table, dressed in a sharp navy suit, her sleek bob tucked behind her ears.
Around the table sat the new board of directors, taking diligent notes as Mara explained the latest acquisitions to the archive. She spoke with authority, grace, and an unparalleled knowledge of the history she was tasked with preserving.
When the meeting concluded, she walked out into the grand foyer. Julian was waiting for her by the mahogany railing. In his arms was one-year-old Elara, dressed in a tiny gray sweater, babbling happily and pulling at Julian’s tie.
Julian smiled as Mara approached. He looked lighter, the shadows of the past completely erased from his features. "How was the meeting, Madame Director?"
"Productive," Mara smiled, leaning in to kiss Elara’s soft cheek, then pressing a kiss to Julian’s lips. "Ready to go home?"

"Always," Julian said.
He offered her his arm, and together, they walked out of the foundation doors into the bright, clear Newport afternoon, leaving the ghosts of the past exactly where they belonged—in the archives.
