"It’s a girl," Dr. Evans announced gently.
They placed the screaming, red-faced infant on Mara’s chest. The moment the baby felt the warmth of her mother's skin, she quieted, her tiny fists curling against Mara's collarbone.
Tears streamed down Mara's face as she looked down at her daughter. She had a full head of dark, wavy hair, just like Julian. Julian leaned down, pressing his forehead against Mara's, his own tears falling freely as he stroked the baby's tiny back.

"She’s perfect," Julian whispered, kissing Mara’s temple. "You’re perfect."
They named her Elara. It meant 'bright, shining one.' The hospital room, filled with morning light breaking through the winter clouds, felt like a world entirely removed from the shadows and cruelty of the foundation. They had built a family from the ruins, and it was wholly, entirely theirs.
