Chapter 1 – The Truth Behind the Foam

Silence swallowed the nursery.

The bubbling white foam continued spreading across the polished hardwood floor, releasing a sharp chemical odor that made everyone instinctively step back.

Emily Carter held her six-month-old son tightly against her chest. Her heart pounded so violently she could barely breathe.

She looked from the poisoned milk... to the terrified maid... and finally to her own mother.

"Mom... answer me."

Margaret Whitmore couldn't speak.

Her perfectly composed appearance collapsed in seconds. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she slowly removed her white gloves.

"I... I prepared the bottle."

Emily's knees nearly gave out.

"No..."

"I didn't know."

The maid, Anna Brooks, slowly stood up despite the red handprint on her face.

"She's lying."

Everyone froze.

Anna wiped away her tears.

"Mrs. Whitmore knew something was wrong. I saw someone hand her a small glass vial this afternoon."

Margaret shook her head violently.

"No... that's not what happened."

Emily's voice hardened.

"Then tell me exactly what happened."

Margaret looked at her grandson.

"I thought it was medicine."
