Chapter 11 - The Lake House Trap

Police surrounded the lake property before sunset.

Bell was gone by the time they entered.

But he had not gone there to hide.

He had gone there to prepare something.

Inside the master bedroom, investigators discovered luggage packed for two adults and one child.

Three airline tickets had been printed.

The destination was Buenos Aires.

The names were false.

But the photographs belonged to Bell, Victoria, and Noah.

The flight departed the following evening.

“They were still planning to take him,” Grace whispered.

“Even after Victoria was arrested?”

Rebecca shook her head.

“The tickets were purchased four months ago.”

Everything had been scheduled.

The wedding.

The custody petition.

The passport.

The escape.

We had mistaken chaos for improvisation.

It was a calendar.

On the kitchen counter, police found an envelope addressed to Marcus.

Inside was a single sentence.

YOU WERE ALWAYS THE WEAK ONE.

Marcus stared at it.

“He knows I talked.”

“Yes.”

“He’s going to kill me.”

I felt no sympathy at first.

Then I remembered Marcus was still Noah’s uncle.

Still my brother.

Still a man who had done terrible things out of cowardice rather than cruelty.

That distinction didn’t absolve him.

But it mattered.

“You need protection,” I said.

Marcus nodded.

Federal agents relocated him.

Meanwhile, Emily was transferred to a secured hospital.

Doctors said her long-term medication exposure required careful evaluation.

She remembered parts of the past.

Other parts were fragmented.

She remembered the crash.

She remembered waking in a clinic.

She remembered Bell telling her I had arranged everything.

She remembered Victoria visiting.

That detail stunned me.

“Victoria saw her?”

“Multiple times,” the agent confirmed.

The woman I had nearly married had looked into my wife’s living face while planning to replace her.

I felt physically sick.

Emily initially refused to see me.

I respected it.

Then she asked for Noah.

That was harder.

Doctors recommended a gradual meeting.

Noah drew her a picture instead.

Three figures holding hands.

Mommy.

Daddy.

Noah.

He wrote one sentence beneath them in uneven letters.

I NEVER STOPPED LOVING YOU.

We sent it to Emily.

An hour later, the hospital called.

“She wants to see Daniel.”

I arrived after dark.

Emily sat near a window.

For three years, I had dreamed of seeing her again.

In every dream, she ran into my arms.

Reality was different.

She recoiled when I entered.

I stopped immediately.

“It’s okay.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You look older.”

“So do you.”

A weak laugh escaped her.

Then she started crying.

“Did you try to kill me?”

“No.”

“Did you marry her?”

“No.”

“Did Noah forget me?”

“Never.”

Her hands began trembling.

I placed his drawing on the table.

Emily stared at it.

Then she pressed both hands over her mouth.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Finally she whispered,

“I remember something.”

“What?”

“The crash wasn’t supposed to kill me.”

My blood chilled.

“How do you know?”

“Because Bell was waiting at the hospital before I arrived.”

May you like

She looked at me.

“He told the ambulance crew he was my husband.”
