Chapter 13 - Three Weeks to Noah’s Birthday

The hidden trust changed the entire case.

Emily’s grandmother had created it secretly because she distrusted the Hale family structure.

Only Emily and one private attorney knew it existed.

That attorney had died eighteen months earlier.

Bell must have discovered pieces of it through stolen medical and personal files.

But he didn’t know the final terms.

Rebecca obtained a sealed copy.

Noah’s inheritance would become irrevocably protected at age six.

Before then, a court-appointed guardian could potentially influence certain administrative decisions.

After his sixth birthday, independent trustees would take over.

Bell had three weeks.

Victoria had less.

From jail, Victoria refused every interview.

Then she suddenly requested a deal.

She offered information about Bell in exchange for reduced charges.

Federal prosecutors listened.

Her first statement was simple.

“Robert will not run.”

“Why?”

“Because he believes Emily belongs to him.”

The words made me furious.

Victoria continued.

“My brother spent years convincing her he saved her.”

“He doesn’t think he kidnapped her.”

“He thinks Daniel was the villain and he rescued her.”

That explained the obsession.

Bell wasn’t merely committing crimes for money.

He had constructed a private reality.

“And Noah?” investigators asked.

Victoria’s expression tightened.

“Noah was necessary.”

“For the trust?”

“For Emily.”

I didn’t understand until the prosecutor explained.

Bell intended eventually to reunite Emily with Noah under controlled circumstances.

He believed if he gave her back her son, she would become permanently loyal to him.

The plan required removing me.

It also required Grace to disappear.

Victoria admitted she had been ordered to create a record portraying Grace as unstable.

“And Marcus?” investigators asked.

Victoria laughed.

“Marcus was useful.”

“Was he involved in Emily’s disappearance?”

“He helped without knowing what he was helping.”

That was the most damning answer possible.

Marcus had not ordered Emily’s kidnapping.

But his lies, financial crimes, and cowardice had made it possible.

Then Victoria revealed another secret.

“Robert has someone inside Daniel’s security team.”

My blood went cold.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect us to believe that?”

“My brother never gave me the name.”

“Why?”

“Because he didn’t trust me either.”

We reviewed every employee.

Every contractor.

Every guard.

One security officer had worked for my family for twelve years.

Another had been hired only eight months ago.

Samuel Trent.

He had passed every background check.

He had military experience.

He was also the guard who had been assigned to the west gate on the night someone broke into Emily’s bedroom.

Samuel disappeared before police reached his apartment.

His locker contained cash.

A second phone.

And photographs of Noah’s daily schedule.

One image had been taken that morning.

At the hospital.

Emily could be seen through a second-floor window.

Bell knew where she was.

Federal agents immediately moved her to a different location.

But before they could transfer her, a fire alarm activated on the hospital’s fourth floor.

Patients began evacuating.

Security cameras went offline.

I received a call from Emily’s nurse.

Her voice was panicked.

“Mr. Hale.”

“What happened?”

“Emily is gone.”
