Chapter 17 - The Debt of Our Fathers

Bell kept the weapon trained on Marcus.

Emily held Noah behind her.

Even terrified, she was shielding him.

Just as Grace had.

Just as she always would.

“Give me the ledger,” Bell ordered.

Marcus lifted it.

“You think burning this changes what happened?”

“No.”

Bell smiled.

“I think watching a Hale finally admit the truth changes everything.”

“You want an admission?”

“Yes.”

Marcus looked toward the hidden recording device federal agents had placed in his collar.

Then he spoke.

“Our father framed your father.”

Bell’s expression tightened.

Marcus continued.

“I found evidence years ago.”

I turned sharply.

That was new.

Bell stared at him.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before Dad died.”

“Marcus.”

My voice was barely audible.

He didn’t look at me.

“I hid it.”

Bell began laughing.

“You see, Daniel?”

“Cowardice is genetic.”

Marcus’s eyes filled with tears.

“He told me exposing it would destroy the company.”

“So you let my father remain a criminal in history.”

“Yes.”

Bell’s hand trembled.

For the first time, his calm vanished.

“My mother died believing he was guilty.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Stop saying that!”

Noah jumped.

Emily pulled him closer.

I stepped forward.

“Robert.”

“Stay back.”

“This is between you and us.”

“No.”

Bell looked toward Noah.

“This is between families.”

“No.”

“It ends with us.”

Bell stared at me.

“You don’t decide when it ends.”

“I do for my son.”

I slowly placed my hands where he could see them.

“My father destroyed yours.”

“Marcus covered it up.”

“I benefited from a company built partly on that lie.”

“I will make it public.”

Marcus looked at me.

Bell stopped smiling.

“What?”

“I will release everything.”

“You’ll destroy Hale Holdings.”

“Maybe.”

“Your shareholders will lose millions.”

“Maybe.”

“Your family name will be ruined.”

“I don’t care.”

Bell looked genuinely confused.

For years, he had believed the Hale name mattered more to us than anything.

That belief had allowed him to predict Marcus.

It had allowed him to manipulate Victoria.

It had allowed him to imagine he could manipulate me.

I looked at Noah.

“My son matters more.”

Emily squeezed Noah’s hand.

Bell’s weapon lowered slightly.

That was enough.

Federal agents moved.

A window shattered.

Bell spun.

Marcus lunged toward him.

A shot exploded.

Emily screamed.

Noah dropped to the floor.

Agents rushed the platform.

Bell struggled.

Marcus fell.

I ran.

“Marcus!”

Blood spread across his shoulder.

He was alive.

Bell was pinned beneath two agents.

His face pressed against the concrete.

He looked at me with pure hatred.

“You think this ends anything?”

I ignored him.

I reached Emily.

For one second, we simply stared at each other.

Then Noah threw both arms around me.

“Daddy!”

I held him.

Emily’s hands joined mine around him.

Our family stood together for the first time since the morning she disappeared.

Behind us, Bell screamed about my father.

About justice.

About revenge.

But Noah buried his face against my chest.

May you like

And his voice was the only one I heard.

“Can we go home now?”
