Chapter 15 - The Custody BattleDesperation breeds delusion. With his military career annihilated, his pension stripped, and a mountain of legal debt threatening to bury him, Grant Brooks made one final, catastrophic miscalculation.

He decided to fight for full physical and legal custody of Ethan.

He didn't do it out of a sudden surge of paternal love. He did it because his bottom-barrel attorney explained that in the state of Washington, child support is calculated based on custody percentages and the income disparity between the parents. If Grant had primary custody, my family’s massive trust fund could be tapped to pay him thousands of dollars a month in child support. He viewed our son not as a child to be loved, but as a financial lifeline to save him from a life of minimum-wage labor.

Family court in King County is usually a place of slow, grinding bureaucracy. But when a case involves the Bennett family, things move with terrifying efficiency.

We convened in the polished oak courtroom of Judge Eleanor Vargas, a woman known for her razor-sharp intellect and absolute lack of patience for deadbeat parents.

Grant sat at the petitioner’s table in an ill-fitting suit he had clearly bought off the rack at a discount store. He looked twitchy, his arrogance replaced by a frantic, sweating desperation. Evelyn Vance sat next to me, cool, composed, and practically vibrating with predatory anticipation.

Grant’s lawyer stood up to make his opening statement. "Your Honor, my client is a decorated military veteran—"

"Former military," Judge Vargas interrupted, not even looking up from the file in front of her. "According to the Department of Defense filings submitted by the respondent, your client received an Other-Than-Honorable discharge for severe ethical violations, including fraud and fraternization. Do not embellish his record in my courtroom, Counselor. Continue."

The lawyer cleared his throat, visibly sweating. "Yes, Your Honor. Despite recent... professional setbacks, Mr. Brooks has been a dedicated father for nine years. The mother, Ms. Bennett, is using her vast wealth to alienate the child from his father. We are asking for primary physical custody to ensure a stable environment, and a commensurate child support order to facilitate that stability."

Evelyn didn't even bother to stand up. She just leaned forward toward her microphone.

"Your Honor, if I may," Evelyn said smoothly. "The 'stable environment' Mr. Brooks is offering currently consists of a month-to-month lease in a studio apartment above a liquor store in Tacoma. He is unemployed. He has zero income."

Evelyn stood up, walking toward the center of the room. "But more importantly, Your Honor, let us examine Mr. Brooks's dedication to his son. I have submitted Exhibit C: the sworn, unredacted military tribunal testimony of Seaman Miller. On the morning of October 14th, Mr. Brooks explicitly ordered armed base security to block his nine-year-old child from entering a naval base, solely so Mr. Brooks could entertain his mistress in his command office."

Grant flinched as if he had been physically struck.

Judge Vargas adjusted her glasses, reading the highlighted transcript Evelyn had placed on the bench. The silence in the courtroom was heavy and suffocating.

"Mr. Brooks," Judge Vargas finally said, her voice dripping with pure, unadulterated disgust. "You actively barred your own child from seeing you, utilizing military security as your personal bouncers to facilitate an extramarital affair. You were discharged for fraud. You are financially destitute by your own actions. And you have the sheer audacity to walk into this courtroom and ask me to remove this child from his mother’s stable, supportive environment so you can collect a child support check?"

"Your Honor, I love my son—" Grant started to say, his voice cracking.

"Sit down and be quiet," Judge Vargas snapped. She didn't deliberate. She didn't call for a recess. She just picked up her pen.

"The petition for custody is emphatically denied," the judge ruled, her gavel hovering over the sounding block. "Natalie Bennett is awarded sole legal and physical custody. The father is granted supervised visitation for two hours, every other Sunday, at a state-approved family center. Visitation is contingent upon the father passing regular psychological evaluations and drug screenings, at his own expense. We are adjourned."

The gavel slammed down like a gunshot.

Grant collapsed into his chair, burying his face in his hands. He had played his last card, and it had burst into flames.
