Chapter 4 - Claire’s AwakeningAcross the city in downtown Seattle, Claire Dawson was stepping out of the private elevator that led directly to her boutique consulting firm. She was dressed in a tailored cream suit, clutching a six-dollar matcha latte, and mentally drafting a text to Grant about their weekend.

Claire had spent the last two years carefully orchestrating her rise. She knew Grant was married, of course. She had dined at my table. But in Claire's mind, I was just the boring, wealthy heiress who bankrolled Grant’s life while he did all the "real" work. She believed Grant was the one with the true power, the military authority, the masculine dominance she found intoxicating. She thought she was replacing me.

She walked through the glass double doors of Dawson Consulting expecting the usual hum of productivity. Instead, she found a scene of absolute chaos.

Her twelve employees were clustered around the receptionist's desk, speaking in hushed, panicked tones. Her Chief Financial Officer, a balding man named David, looked like he was about to have a heart attack.

"David? What’s going on?" Claire asked, annoyed. "Why is no one at their desks?"

David hurried over, his hands trembling as he held up an iPad. "Claire. We have a massive problem. The Bennett Harbor Foundation just transmitted an emergency termination notice."

Claire rolled her eyes, waving her hand dismissively. "Oh, please. It’s just Natalie throwing a tantrum. I’ll call Grant. He controls the Foundation’s military tech allocations. I'll have him smooth it over by lunch."

"You don't understand," David interrupted, his voice rising in panic. "Grant Brooks doesn't control anything! The Foundation is a private trust controlled entirely by Natalie Brooks and her brother. They invoked the 'morals, ethics, and fraud' clawback clause in our master contract."

Claire stopped walking. The matcha latte suddenly felt very heavy in her hand. "What does that mean?"

"It means they didn't just cancel future funding," David said grimly. "They initiated a legal freeze on all current operational capital linked to their grants. The bank just called me, Claire. Our payroll accounts are locked. Our vendor accounts are frozen. We have zero operating capital. We are effectively bankrupt as of 9:00 AM this morning."

"They can't do that!" Claire shrieked, her perfectly curated composure shattering. "We have military deliverables! The Navy will intervene!"

"The Navy just suspended our clearance," David countered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "The DoD Inspector General is opening an investigation into us for misappropriation of funds and illicit fraternization with a commanding officer. Claire... what did you do?"

Claire dropped her latte. The cup burst on the hardwood floor, splattering green liquid over her expensive Italian leather heels. The comfortable, powerful, wealthy life she had envisioned building with my husband was evaporating before her eyes, replaced by the terrifying reality that she had picked a fight with a woman who owned the very ground she stood on.
