Chapter 9 - The Dynamic DuoDespite the hurricane of lawyers, investigators, and audits swirling around me, my true battleground was the quiet moments at home with Ethan.

We had temporarily moved into my mother’s sprawling estate in Medina, a gated fortress that offered absolute privacy. I kept him insulated from the news, but children are incredibly perceptive. They feel the shifts in gravity.
One evening, after dinner, we were sitting on the floor of his bedroom, snapping together a massive Lego Star Destroyer. The rain beat a gentle rhythm against the glass.
Ethan had been quiet for twenty minutes. Finally, he put down a gray plastic piece and looked up at me. His hazel eyes—so much like his father's, yet entirely innocent—were clouded with worry.
"Mom? Is Dad in jail?"
My heart broke a little, but I promised myself the morning we left the naval base that I would never lie to him.
"No, buddy. He’s not in jail," I said softly, abandoning the Lego ship. "But he is in very serious trouble."
"Because of the lady at his office?"
"Yes," I nodded. "Because of her, and because of some other choices he made. Your dad broke the rules of our family. And he broke rules at his job, too. When you break big rules, there are big consequences."
Ethan pulled his knees to his chest. "Is he still my dad?"
I slid across the carpet and pulled him into a tight embrace. He smelled like baby shampoo and warm cotton. "He will always be your dad, Ethan. Nothing changes that. But our family is going to look different now. He isn't going to live with us anymore."
He buried his face in my shoulder. I felt the hot dampness of his tears soaking through my sweater. I let him cry. I didn't tell him not to be sad. I just held him together while he fell apart.
After a few minutes, he pulled back, wiping his nose with the back of his hand. "So... it's just you and me now?"
"Just you and me," I smiled, poking him gently in the ribs to get a small giggle out of him. "The dynamic duo. Batman and Robin. Han Solo and Chewbacca."
He managed a weak smile. "I get to be Han Solo."
May you like
"Obviously," I agreed. "I like our duo, Ethan. We’re going to be just fine."
