Chapter 18 - The Last BargainMichael called Luca that evening.

No disguise.

No unknown number.

His real phone.

His real voice.

"Luca."

"Where are you?"

"That isn't important."

"It is to me."

Michael sighed.

"You always were the difficult one."

Luca activated the call trace Detective Hayes had arranged.

Emma sat across from him.

Grace slept upstairs with a police officer outside the room.

"What do you want?"

Michael answered calmly.

"The Blue Harbor laptop."

"It's with the police."

"Then get it."

"No."

Michael paused.

"You haven't changed."

"I have."

"Marco said you would burn everything down for the truth."

"He knew you better than you think."

Luca's jaw tightened.

"Did you kill him?"

Emma stopped breathing.

Michael said nothing for several seconds.

"No."

"Did Connor cause the crash?"

"I didn't tell Connor to hurt Marco."

"That's not what I asked."

Michael's voice became tired.

"Connor was supposed to stop him."

"Adrian was supposed to convince him."

"Neither of them could follow simple instructions."

Luca stood.

"So you were there."

"No."

"You planned it."

"I planned a conversation."

"Marco died."

"And I have regretted that every day."

Luca's voice turned cold.

"Regret isn't innocence."

Michael changed the subject.

"The laptop contains records that will destroy your father."

"Maybe."

"It will destroy the company."

"Maybe."

"Thousands of employees."

"Maybe."

"You'll sacrifice them?"

"For Marco?"

"No."

Luca looked toward Emma.

"For the truth."

Michael laughed softly.

"Your brother was right."

"About what?"

"You really will burn it all down."

The trace continued.

Detective Hayes signaled from another room.

Thirty seconds.

Michael continued.

"I want one exchange."

"No."

"You haven't heard it."

"I don't care."

"You should."

Luca waited.

Michael spoke quietly.

"I'll give you the original file from Marco's car."

Luca froze.

"What original file?"

"The one showing what happened after the dash camera stopped."

Emma stood.

Luca's eyes sharpened.

"You have it?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Bring me the laptop."

"Not happening."

"Then you'll never know whether Connor caused the crash."

Luca looked at Hayes through the doorway.

She nodded.

Keep him talking.

"What does the video show?"

Michael laughed.

"You know better than that."

Luca's voice softened deliberately.

"Michael."

"You were family."

A pause.

"For twenty years."

Another pause.

"Give me one reason not to hate you."

Michael's breathing changed.

The calmness slipped.

"I protected your father."

"No."

"You protected yourself."

"I kept the company alive."

"You stole from it."

"I redirected money."

"You forged documents."

"To protect transactions that should never have been exposed."

"You manipulated Adrian."

"He was greedy."

"You used Connor."

"He was stupid."

"You went after Emma."

Silence.

Luca repeated it.

"You went after Emma and Grace."

Michael's voice hardened.

"I never wanted the child harmed."

Emma's eyes filled with fury.

Luca stayed controlled.

"You prepared false paternity forms."

"Connor needed leverage."

"You sent him to the hospital."

"I told him to retrieve the key."

Emma closed her eyes.

There it was.

A confession.

Not complete.

But enough.

Detective Hayes signaled.

Location acquired.

Luca continued.

"Where are you?"

Michael realized something.

His voice changed.

"You traced me."

The call disconnected.

Hayes moved immediately.

"Warehouse near the river."

Police units left.

Luca grabbed his coat.

Emma stopped him.

"Don't."

"I have to go."

"No."

"Emma."

"You have police."

"You have Hayes."

"You don't have to run toward every dangerous room because you think that's what protecting people means."

Luca stared at her.

She stepped closer.

"Marco trusted you to protect the truth."

"He didn't ask you to die for it."

The words reached him.

Luca slowly removed his coat.

Hayes looked back from the doorway.

"Stay here."

"We'll call."

Forty minutes later, Hayes called.

Michael had been arrested.

No one had been injured.

Inside the warehouse, police found computer drives, forged records, financial ledgers, and the original memory card.

They also found Connor's missing phone.

The final video showed the truth.

Connor had slowed in front of Marco.

Adrian's SUV remained behind.

Marco attempted to move around Connor.

The road was slick.

Connor swerved toward him.

Marco lost control.

The crash followed seconds later.

Connor and Adrian stopped.

Neither called emergency services immediately.

Michael arrived later.

And instead of helping expose what happened, he removed evidence from Marco's vehicle.

Emma listened in silence.

Luca closed his eyes.

It was over.

But the truth did not feel victorious.

It felt heavy.

Marco had not died because of one dramatic conspiracy.

He had died because three men made selfish decisions in sequence.

Greed.

Fear.

Silence.

Each one had believed someone else would carry the blame.

Now they all would have to answer for what they had done.
