Chapter 20 - Safe NowOne year later, Grace Moretti Carter took her first steps across Emma's living room.

Three people immediately argued about who she had been walking toward.

Emma insisted it was her.

Vincent claimed Grace had clearly been heading toward him.

Luca said nothing.

That was suspicious because Grace had landed directly against his knees.

Daniel laughed from the kitchen.

"She picked Luca."

Vincent frowned.

"No one asked you."

The apartment filled with laughter.

Emma stood near the window and watched them.

A year earlier, she had sat in a hospital room believing her future had narrowed to fear.

Now sunlight filled a home she had chosen herself.

Grace's toys covered the floor.

Marco's photograph stood beside the bookshelf.

Not hidden.

Not surrounded by grief.

Simply present.

The investigations had taken months.

Michael Grant eventually pleaded guilty to multiple financial and obstruction charges.

Adrian Moretti accepted responsibility for his role in the illegal payment network and for helping pressure Marco.

Connor faced consequences for the hospital incident, stalking, fraudulent filings, and his conduct on the night of Marco's crash.

Emma attended only the hearings she needed to attend.

She refused to make those men the center of Grace's childhood.

Moretti Development changed too.

Luca removed several executives.

Vincent stepped down as chairman.

Independent auditors rebuilt the company's internal controls.

Luca created a legal assistance fund for employees dealing with domestic safety issues.

He never named it after Sofia.

But Emma knew who it was for.

One afternoon, Luca arrived carrying a small wooden box.

Emma opened the door.

"What's that?"

"Something for Grace."

"She already has enough things from you."

"This isn't from me."

Emma's smile disappeared.

"Marco?"

Luca nodded.

They sat at the kitchen table.

Grace played nearby.

Luca placed the box between them.

"Our attorney found it in Marco's personal storage unit."

"Michael never knew about this one."

Emma slowly opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Receipts.

Small notes.

A hospital ultrasound image.

And a letter.

The front read:

For Grace.

Emma covered her mouth.

Luca looked toward the window.

"You should read it alone."

"No."

Emma shook her head.

"Stay."

She unfolded the letter.

Marco's words filled two pages.

Dear Grace,

I don't know when you'll read this.

I don't even know whether I'll be brave enough to give it to you myself one day.

Emma swallowed.

Your mother says you kick whenever I talk too much.

So apparently you already have excellent judgment.

Emma laughed through tears.

Luca smiled.

She continued.

I want you to know something before anyone tells you what being a Moretti means.

A last name is not a destiny.

Money is not character.

Power is not courage.

Courage is telling the truth when lying would be easier.

Luca's eyes lowered.

Your mother has more courage than anyone I've ever met.

Emma stopped for a moment.

She continued.

My brother Luca will probably pretend he isn't sentimental.

Do not believe him.

Luca sighed.

"He really planned to ruin my reputation."

Emma smiled.

She read on.

If he's part of your life, make him laugh sometimes.

He forgets.

Luca looked away.

Emma continued.

And if I'm not there when you read this, don't let anyone tell you my story ended with whatever happened to me.

My story continued the moment I learned about you.

Emma's tears fell freely now.

Grace looked up from the floor.

"Mama?"

Emma smiled.

"I'm okay, sweetheart."

Grace returned to her toy.

The final paragraph was shorter.

Be kind.

Be stubborn when it matters.

Never confuse someone controlling you with someone loving you.

And if you ever feel afraid, tell someone.

The right people will listen.

Love, Dad.

Emma folded the letter carefully.

No one spoke for a while.

Finally, Luca looked toward Grace.

"Marco would've been a good father."

Emma nodded.

"The best."

Grace stood beside the couch.

She looked toward Luca.

Then she began walking.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Luca crouched.

"Come on."

Grace laughed.

She reached him.

Luca caught her gently.

Emma watched from the table.

For one second, another memory appeared.

A hospital corridor.

A bright blue suit.

A terrified mother.

A black pen.

A stranger writing his name beneath a word that did not belong to him.

At the time, Emma had believed that signature was Luca's promise.

Now she understood differently.

The promise had not been the word Father.

It had not been the paperwork.

It had not been Luca's last name.

The promise had been much simpler.

Someone had finally seen her fear and believed it.

Someone had stood beside her without asking her to become smaller.

Someone had helped her find enough safety to stand on her own again.

Emma walked toward Luca and Grace.

Luca looked up.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You're staring."

"I was thinking."

"That usually causes trouble."

Emma smiled.

"A year ago, you told me I was safe."

Luca's expression softened.

"I remember."

"You were wrong."

He frowned.

Emma looked around the apartment.

At Marco's photographs.

At Grace laughing.

At the sunlight.

At the front door she could open or close whenever she wanted.

"I wasn't safe because you said so."

Luca understood.

Emma continued.

"I became safe because I finally stopped letting someone else decide what my life was allowed to be."

Luca nodded.

"That's better."

Grace reached toward Emma.

She took her daughter.

Vincent called from the kitchen.

"Are we eating this cake or holding a family meeting?"

Emma laughed.

"Coming."

Luca started toward the kitchen.

Emma stopped him.

"Luca."

He turned.

"Thank you."

He shook his head.

"You don't owe me that."

"I know."

She smiled.

"That's why I can say it."

Luca smiled back.

Outside, Chicago moved beneath a clear afternoon sky.

Cars passed.

People hurried home.

Nothing dramatic happened.

No one followed them.

No unknown phone rang.

No stranger waited outside the door.

For the first time, ordinary life felt extraordinary.

Emma looked at Grace.

"Ready?"

Grace smiled.

Luca opened the kitchen door.

"Birthday cake is waiting."

Emma followed him inside.

And this time, when the door closed behind them, it did not feel like a trap.

May you like

It felt like home.
