Chapter 19 - The HearingThree weeks later, Emma walked into a courtroom carrying Grace.

Luca walked beside her.

Not in front.

Not behind.

Beside.

Connor faced charges connected to the hospital incident, forged documents, financial crimes, stalking, and the events surrounding Marco's final drive.

Adrian had agreed to cooperate with investigators.

Michael faced the most serious fraud and obstruction allegations.

Vincent Moretti had announced an independent review of every company account connected to Blue Harbor.

Several executives resigned.

The company survived.

Barely.

Luca did exactly what Marco predicted.

He chose the truth over the Moretti name.

The emergency hearing that morning concerned Connor's attempt to claim parental rights using documents Michael had prepared.

The judge reviewed the evidence.

Then she looked toward Connor's attorney.

"Your client knew these documents contained false information?"

The attorney hesitated.

Connor whispered something.

The attorney answered.

"He disputes that characterization."

Emma almost laughed.

For months, Connor had survived through carefully chosen phrases.

Misunderstanding.

Concern.

Family issue.

Private matter.

Now those words had nowhere left to hide.

The judge turned to Emma.

"Ms. Carter, do you wish to make a statement?"

Emma stood.

Her knees shook.

Luca did not move.

He let her own the moment.

Emma looked at Connor.

"I spent a long time believing fear was the same thing as weakness."

"It isn't."

"Fear is information."

"It tells you when something is wrong."

"The mistake is when everyone around you teaches you to ignore it."

Connor stared at the table.

Emma continued.

"I told people I was afraid."

"Some believed me."

"Some didn't."

"Some told me Connor seemed charming."

"Some said he was probably just upset."

"Some said I should try to keep things peaceful."

Her voice grew stronger.

"I tried."

"It never made him peaceful."

"It only made me quieter."

The courtroom remained silent.

Emma looked toward Grace.

"My daughter will not grow up learning that silence keeps her safe."

"She will grow up knowing she can leave."

"She can speak."

"She can ask for help."

"And when she says no, the answer is no."

Connor finally looked at her.

Emma did not look away.

The judge later invalidated the fraudulent filings and extended Emma's protective order.

Connor was prohibited from contacting her.

It was only one hearing.

More legal proceedings would follow.

But when Emma stepped outside the courthouse, the air felt different.

Lighter.

Luca stood near the steps.

"You were good in there."

Emma smiled.

"I was terrified."

"Both can be true."

She looked at him.

"You learned that from Marco?"

"No."

Luca glanced toward Grace.

"I learned it from you."

Emma shook her head.

"You really know how to make everything dramatic."

"I'm Italian-American."

"It's contractual."

Emma laughed.

It was the first effortless laugh she could remember in months.

Vincent approached slowly.

He looked toward Grace.

He had seen her several times since the truth came out.

He never asked to hold her.

He always waited.

Emma appreciated that.

"May I?"

Vincent asked.

Emma looked down at Grace.

Then she placed her carefully in his arms.

Vincent's face changed instantly.

All the power associated with his name disappeared.

He was simply a grandfather holding his granddaughter.

"Hello, Grace."

His voice broke slightly.

"I'm sorry your father isn't here."

Luca looked away.

Emma touched Vincent's arm.

"He left more of himself behind than he knew."

Vincent nodded.

Afterward, Daniel drove them home.

Not to a safe house.

Not to a corporate apartment.

To Emma's new apartment.

The address was private.

The locks were new.

The windows looked over a quiet park.

Luca carried two boxes upstairs.

Emma carried Grace.

"You can put those in the kitchen."

Luca nodded.

He set them down.

Then he looked around.

"This is good."

"It is."

Emma noticed something in his hand.

The temporary hospital authorization sheet.

The one he had signed beneath FATHER.

"You kept that?"

"The nurse gave it to Detective Hayes."

"Hayes gave it back to me after the investigation."

Emma took the paper.

She stared at Luca's signature.

"So this is how we met."

"You looked happier at the time."

Emma gave him a look.

"I was wearing a hospital gown and crying."

"Still less intimidating than you are now."

She smiled.

Then she tore the form carefully in half.

Luca raised an eyebrow.

Emma looked toward Grace.

"She doesn't need a pretend father."

"No."

"She had a real one."

"Yes."

Emma handed Luca one half of the paper.

"But she could use an uncle."

Luca looked down at it.

For several seconds, he could not speak.

May you like

Then he nodded.

"I can do that."
