Chapter 13 - THE FATHER’S CONFESSION

Victor remained in intensive care for three days.

Doctors found traces of sedatives, blood thinners, and experimental neurological drugs in his system.

He had been kept weak for years.

Yet the financial records carried his verified signature.

Ethan sat beside his father’s bed.

Claire waited near the window with Sophie asleep in her arms.

Nathan remained under police supervision in another room.

Detective Ruiz placed copies of the payments on Victor’s blanket.

“Did you authorize these?”

Victor looked at the signatures.

“Yes.”

Ethan stood.

“You paid the people who helped Eleanor?”

“I paid them before she took control.”

“Why?”

Victor looked toward Sophie.

“Because I believed I was protecting the family.”

Claire’s voice was quiet.

“From what?”

Victor closed his eyes.

“From Nathan.”

Ethan stared at him.

“Nathan was a child.”

“He was violent.”

“He threatened Eleanor.”

“He said she killed Amelia.”

“She did kill her.”

“I know that now.”

Victor struggled to breathe.

“At the time, Eleanor showed me medical reports.”

“She paid doctors to diagnose Nathan with delusions.”

“She showed me recordings of him threatening her.”

“Were they real?”

“Some were edited.”

“Some were not.”

Ethan moved closer.

“You sent your twelve-year-old son to a private clinic.”

Victor’s eyes filled with tears.

“I believed he needed help.”

“And when he disappeared?”

“Eleanor told me he died in the fire.”

Ethan looked away.

Claire understood the deeper wound.

Victor had not simply failed to protect Nathan.

He had helped build the system that imprisoned him.

Detective Ruiz pointed to another payment.

“This account remained active after your reported death.”

Victor nodded.

“Eleanor forced me to sign documents.”

“She threatened Ethan.”

“Why did you not expose her before the boating accident?”

“I intended to.”

“She discovered my plan.”

“What happened on the boat?”

“Grant struck me.”

“I woke inside the Vermont clinic.”

Claire stepped forward.

“You told me someone else gave Eleanor orders.”

Victor’s expression changed.

“I was confused.”

“No.”

“You were terrified.”

Victor looked toward the door.

“The man was called Gabriel.”

Ethan frowned.

“Gabriel who?”

“I never learned his last name.”

“He handled offshore accounts.”

“He knew every weakness in the family.”

“He convinced Eleanor that she could control the company.”

“Did you see him?”

“Once.”

Victor looked directly at Ethan.

“He wore a gold ring with a black stone.”

Claire remembered the gala.

One guest had worn such a ring.

A silver-haired investor named Samuel Cross.

He had stood near the terrace when Eleanor shoved her.

He had been the first guest to leave before police arrived.

Detective Ruiz searched the gala photographs.

Samuel Cross appeared in dozens of images.

In one, he stood beside Julian.

In another, he spoke with Grant.

In a third, he watched Claire enter the ballroom.

His eyes were not on Claire.

They were on Ethan.

Ruiz called her department.

Samuel Cross’s identity was false.

His passport had been issued using the birth certificate of a child who died in 1968.

Claire looked at Victor.

“Is Samuel Cross Gabriel?”

Victor studied the photograph.

His monitor alarm accelerated.

“That is him.”

Ethan leaned closer.

“Where would he go?”

Victor whispered one word.

“Home.”

The lights in the hospital flickered.

Every monitor went dark.

Emergency power failed to activate.

Sophie woke and began crying.

Detective Ruiz drew her weapon.

A shadow appeared behind the glass door.

A man wearing a gold ring entered the intensive care unit.
