Chapter 16 - THE HOUSE OF SMOKE

Flames rose between Claire and the stairs.
Eleanor moved deeper into the basement.
Claire followed along the narrow strip of concrete near the wall.
“You will not escape.”
“I do not need to escape.”
Eleanor opened a metal case.
Inside were photographs of Claire, Ethan, Sophie, Nathan, and Victor.
Red marks covered several faces.
“You planned to kill all of us.”
“I planned to restore order.”
“The Hawthorne name survived wars, scandals, and incompetent men.”
“I refused to let it die because of a frightened girl with a memory card.”
Claire stepped closer.
“You are not protecting the family.”
“You are protecting the story you told yourself.”
Eleanor lifted a pistol.
“Where is Sophie?”
“Far from you.”
Eleanor aimed at Claire’s chest.
“Then you are no longer useful.”
A sprinkler pipe burst overhead.
Water poured across the flames.
Eleanor turned.
Nathan stood near the utility controls.
His injured arm was wrapped in a sling.
“You always did choose the wrong child.”
Eleanor fired.
Nathan dropped behind the furnace.
Claire grabbed a shovel from the wall and struck Eleanor’s wrist.
The pistol slid across the floor.
Eleanor seized Claire’s hair.
They fell against a shelf.
Glass jars shattered around them.
Eleanor pressed Claire’s face toward the spreading fire.
“You ruined everything.”
Claire drove her elbow backward.
Eleanor stumbled.
Nathan reached for the gun.
Eleanor kicked it into the flames.
Upstairs, Ethan carried Sophie through the smoke.
Detective Ruiz and the surviving agents entered through the front door.
They pulled the unconscious officers outside.
Ethan returned toward the basement.
Ruiz tried to stop him.
“My wife is down there.”
He wrapped a wet cloth over his face and descended.
Claire had Eleanor pinned against the wall.
Eleanor reached into her coat and removed the small blade from the greenhouse.
Ethan saw it.
“Claire!”
Eleanor turned.
Claire caught her wrist.
The two women struggled near the burning stairs.
The weakened railing collapsed.
Eleanor fell through the gap.
Claire grabbed her hand.
Eleanor hung above the basement floor.
Fire surrounded her.
For one second, Claire considered letting go.
Eleanor saw the thought in her eyes.
“You want me dead.”
“Yes.”
Claire tightened her grip.
“But I will not become you.”
Ethan helped pull Eleanor up.
Detective Ruiz reached the basement with firefighters.
They restrained Eleanor and carried her outside.
Nathan emerged through a side window.
Everyone survived.
The safe house did not.
By dawn, only blackened walls remained.
Eleanor sat inside a police vehicle.
Claire approached the window.
Eleanor looked at her with exhausted hatred.
“You saved me so you could watch me suffer.”
“No.”
Claire held her gaze.
“I saved you because Sophie will grow up knowing her mother chose justice.”
The vehicle drove away.
Ethan stood beside Claire.
Nathan joined them.
For the first time, the surviving members of the Hawthorne family watched a house burn without losing anyone inside it.
Then Detective Ruiz received the report from the fire investigator.

The basement fuel had been placed hours before Eleanor arrived.
Someone else had planned the fire.
