Chapter 17 - THE FINAL BOARD MEETING

The Hawthorne board convened one week later.
Federal agents attended the meeting.
Reporters filled the lobby.
Investors demanded answers about the criminal accounts, illegal payments, and hidden medical facilities.
Ethan entered the boardroom with Claire beside him.
Nathan and Julian followed under police supervision.
Victor attended through a secure video connection from the hospital.
The chairman’s seat remained empty.
Eleanor had occupied it for eighteen years.
Samuel Cross had expected to take it after destroying the family.
Ethan remained standing.
“This company was built with stolen work.”
“It was preserved through violence, fraud, and fear.”
“Today, that ends.”
Several directors protested.
One demanded that Ethan protect the company’s reputation.
Claire placed the original documents on the table.
“The reputation is already dead.”
“The question is whether the company deserves to survive.”
Ethan announced the creation of a restitution fund for the Mercer family and every victim harmed by Eleanor’s network.
He surrendered the Hawthorne family’s controlling privileges.
He ordered an independent investigation into the company’s history.
The room erupted.
Julian watched silently.
Nathan leaned toward him.
“You wanted control.”
Julian shook his head.
“I wanted her approval.”
Nathan understood.
They had both spent their lives chasing something Eleanor had never intended to give.
A federal prosecutor entered the room.
He carried Eleanor’s signed confession.
She had admitted to killing Amelia Hawthorne, imprisoning Victor, falsifying Nathan’s death, kidnapping Claire, and ordering Grant to destroy the archive.
She blamed Samuel for the financial conspiracy.
Samuel blamed Eleanor for the murders.
Each had begun destroying the other.
The prosecutor placed another document before Ethan.
“We identified the person who prepared the basement before the fire.”
Ethan read the name.
Julian Hawthorne.
Every officer in the room turned toward him.
Julian stood.
“That is a lie.”
Security footage showed him entering the safe house under another agent’s identification.
Claire looked at him.
“You helped Eleanor escape.”
“No.”
“You placed the fuel.”
Julian’s face twisted.
“She told me she only wanted leverage.”
Nathan moved between Julian and the door.
“You knew a child was inside.”
“I did not know she would set it on fire.”
“You always say you did not know.”
Julian shoved Nathan.
Officers drew their weapons.
Julian grabbed a glass water pitcher and struck one agent.
He ran toward the emergency exit.
Ethan intercepted him.
The cousins crashed against the boardroom table.
Julian reached for the fallen agent’s gun.
Claire kicked it away.
Nathan pinned Julian’s arm.
Officers handcuffed him.
Julian looked toward the empty chairman’s chair.
“She promised it would be mine.”
Ethan stood over him.
“That chair cost you everything.”
Julian was taken away.
The board voted unanimously to remove every Hawthorne family member from automatic leadership.
Ethan supported the decision.
After the meeting, reporters surrounded Claire and Ethan.
One asked whether their marriage had survived.
Claire looked at Ethan.
“We survived.”
“That is enough for today.”
They left through a private exit.
Nathan waited near the car.
He held a sealed envelope recovered from Eleanor’s belongings.
“It is addressed to Sophie.”
Claire took it.
“Did anyone open it?”
“No.”
Inside was a photograph of Sophie asleep in Margaret’s house.
A man stood in the reflection of the window.
He wore a gold ring with a black stone.
Samuel had been watching the child long before Eleanor found her.

On the back, he had written a message.
Eleanor was never my only partner.
