Chapter 11 - The Second Ledger

Samuel Hale had hidden the second ledger inside a place Richard would never willingly enter.

A church basement in Oak Park.

Marion finally admitted it that evening.

Samuel had funded the church’s community kitchen.

After realizing Richard was manipulating company books, he placed copies of confidential records inside a steel donation box.

Only Evelyn and Marion knew.

“Why didn’t you retrieve it?”

Willow asked.

Marion looked ashamed.

“Because if the records survived, so did my guilt.”

Michael drove Willow to the church.

A retired pastor met them at the side door.

He remembered Samuel.

“He said someone might come for the box one day.”

The pastor led them downstairs.

Behind an old brick wall was a steel compartment.

Inside sat a leather ledger sealed in wax.

Michael broke the seal.

The pages contained dates, payments, ownership percentages, and private loans.

Then Willow found Richard Sterling’s name.

Beside it were payments to a city detective.

Payments to a bank officer.

Payments to Samuel’s physician.

And one payment made two days before Evelyn’s death.

Forty thousand dollars.

Recipient initials.

D.C.

Michael went pale.

“I know those initials.”

“Who?”

“Detective Daniel Crane.”

Willow recognized the name from childhood.

Crane had been the officer who came to their house after her mother died.

He had told Michael the investigation found no mechanical tampering.

He had closed the case.

“He’s still alive?”

Michael nodded.

“Retired in Wisconsin.”

Willow photographed the ledger.

Then Helena called.

Her voice was urgent.

“Turn on the news.”

Willow opened a live stream.

Lucas Sterling stood outside a police station.

Reporters surrounded him.

His attorney stood beside him.

Lucas looked directly into the cameras.

“Last night, I assaulted my wife.”

No excuses followed.

No alcohol defense.

No misunderstanding.

“I did it.”

Willow watched without blinking.

“I also withheld information concerning historical ownership irregularities at Sterling Global.”

Reporters exploded with questions.

Lucas continued.

“My father instructed me to conceal records.”

Richard’s empire shook in real time.

Then Lucas said something nobody expected.

“I have provided investigators with my personal communications and company files.”

Michael looked at Willow.

“He turned.”

Willow did not feel relief.

She felt tired.

The confession could help the investigation.

It could not undo anything.

Then Lucas finished.

“There is one more person authorities need to find.”

He looked down at his notes.

“Former Detective Daniel Crane.”

Willow stared at the second ledger.

May you like

Crane was no longer merely a name from the past.

He was the surviving bridge between Richard Sterling and Evelyn Donovan’s death.
