Chapter 15 - The Name on the Certificate

Richard Sterling was charged with offenses connected to fraud, obstruction, witness intimidation, arson, and the investigation into Evelyn Donovan’s death.

The murder-related case remained complicated.

Twenty-eight years had erased witnesses.

But it had not erased everything.

The biggest shock came three days later.

Investigators recovered a safe from beneath Plant Three.

Inside was the original Hale voting certificate.

Willow’s name had been handwritten beneath her mother’s.

The trust language was clear.

Evelyn’s controlling interest passed automatically to her biological child.

Sterling Global’s lawyers tried to argue the company had changed too much for the old certificate to matter.

A judge disagreed.

The trust’s ownership claim would proceed.

The company’s board suspended Richard.

Lucas resigned from every executive position.

Creditors froze several transactions.

Investors demanded an independent audit.

Then the auditors discovered something even worse.

Richard had used the disputed Hale assets as collateral repeatedly for decades.

Ownership uncertainty spread through dozens of Sterling subsidiaries.

The empire had not been built on rock.

It had been built on a forged signature.

Willow sat in a courtroom when the temporary ruling was announced.

Richard was brought in wearing a dark suit and ankle restraints.

He looked toward her.

The old contempt was still there.

“Enjoy it.”

His voice carried across the aisle.

“You think this makes you one of us?”

Willow stood.

“No.”

She looked at Michael sitting behind her.

“That’s the best part.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“I never wanted to be one of you.”

The judge entered.

Everyone rose.

Hours later, the court temporarily recognized the Samuel Hale Trust as a disputed controlling stakeholder pending final proceedings.

Reporters surrounded Willow outside.

“How does it feel to potentially become one of the wealthiest women in Chicago?”

Willow paused.

Five years earlier, that question might have frightened her.

Now she smiled.

“I was wealthy before today.”

Reporters leaned closer.

Willow looked at her father.

“I just measured it differently.”

That quote traveled farther than the slap video.

But that evening, Michael received an unexpected visitor at the repair shop.

Lucas Sterling stood outside the bay doors.

His hands were empty.

His expensive suit was gone.

“I need to tell Willow one last thing.”

Michael stared at him.

“She doesn’t owe you a conversation.”

“I know.”

May you like

Lucas swallowed.

“But she needs to know what Richard planned for the child we never had.”
