Chapter 7 - Floor Forty-Two

Sterling Tower was nearly empty at 11:30 p.m.

Willow entered through the executive garage wearing jeans, a dark coat, and no jewelry.

Helena waited in a car two blocks away.

Michael wanted to come inside.

Willow refused.

“This part belongs to me.”

Security recognized her immediately.

“Mrs. Sterling.”

Willow forced a smile.

“I left something in Lucas’s office.”

The guard waved her through.

Five years of being treated like decorative furniture had given Willow one unexpected advantage.

People rarely noticed what she noticed.

She knew which cameras rotated.

She knew which elevator required a second badge.

She knew Richard’s assistant left at ten on Thursdays.

The elevator opened on forty-two.

Willow stepped into silence.

The private archive door stood at the end of the corridor.

Marion’s key turned smoothly.

Inside were metal cabinets, storage boxes, paintings, old contracts, and photographs.

Willow began taking pictures.

Then she found a cabinet labeled H.

Hale.

Her pulse accelerated.

Inside were original corporate ledgers.

Insurance reports.

Bank transfers.

A police report from the night Evelyn died.

One page had been marked by hand.

OFFICER PAID - $40,000.

Willow photographed everything.

Then she saw a sealed envelope.

MICHAEL DONOVAN.

Inside was surveillance from twenty-eight years earlier.

Photographs of Michael holding infant Willow.

Photographs outside his home.

Photographs at the repair shop.

A note beneath them read:

Pressure successful.

Donovan agreed to silence after second warning.

Willow’s stomach turned.

Second warning.

She photographed the page.

Then the lights went out.

The archive room dropped into darkness.

Willow froze.

Footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Slow.

Deliberate.

The door opened.

Lucas stood there.

He had a bruise beside his mouth from Richard’s strike.

“You always were terrible at lying.”

Willow backed toward the cabinet.

Lucas closed the door.

“Give me the phone.”

“No.”

“Willow.”

His voice was different tonight.

Less angry.

More desperate.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

She almost laughed.

“That sentence seems popular in your family.”

Lucas moved closer.

“My father says those documents are fake.”

“Then why are you here?”

He stopped.

Willow held his stare.

“If they’re fake, let me walk out.”

Lucas said nothing.

That silence answered everything.

Willow raised her phone.

“The files are already uploaded.”

That was a lie.

Lucas believed it.

His face changed.

“You’re going to destroy us.”

Willow shook her head.

“No.”

“Your father did that decades ago.”

The fire alarm suddenly screamed.

Red emergency lights flashed.

Smoke began pushing beneath the archive door.

Lucas turned toward the hallway.

Willow smelled burning paper.

Richard was not moving the evidence.

He was destroying the entire floor.
