Chapter 12 - Melissa’s OfferMelissa requested a private settlement.

Evelyn laughed when her attorney called.

I did not.

I knew Melissa would not ask for a meeting unless she believed she could still control the outcome.

We agreed to meet in a conference room with lawyers present.

Melissa arrived wearing cream-colored silk and enough diamonds to finance my parents’ store for several years.

She looked exactly as she had at my wedding.

Perfect.

Cold.

Untouched.

She sat across from me.

“I regret how complicated this has become.”

I almost admired the sentence.

Not what happened.

Not what she did.

Only the complication.

Evelyn slid a legal pad toward herself.

“State your proposal.”

Melissa’s attorney offered a large financial settlement.

In return, I would withdraw certain civil claims, agree to confidentiality, and support sealing the security recordings.

The number on the paper was larger than anything my parents had ever owned.

Melissa watched my face.

“You could rebuild your entire life.”

I met her eyes.

“My life doesn’t need your money to exist.”

Her smile faded.

“Everyone has a price.”

“That must be how your family became so confused.”

Melissa leaned back.

“You think you won because of one video.”

“No.”

“I think the video proved what happened.”

“You have no idea what kind of pressure Callan was under.”

“You created the pressure.”

“I protected my son.”

“You taught him that hurting his wife was acceptable if you approved of the reason.”

Her eyes sharpened.

“Be careful.”

Evelyn immediately interrupted.

“Mrs. Harrington, do not threaten my client.”

Melissa smiled again.

“I would never.”

I placed the settlement offer back on the table.

“I reject it.”

Her attorney looked surprised.

Melissa did not.

She stared at me for several seconds.

Then she said the cruelest thing she had ever said.

“Callan never would have married you without my permission.”

I felt the old Anastasia rising.

The woman who wanted acceptance.

The woman who swallowed insults.

The woman who tried harder whenever they treated her worse.

But she was gone.

I stood.

“Then giving permission was your first mistake.”

Melissa’s expression finally cracked.

I walked toward the door.

Her voice followed me.

“If that footage becomes public, you’ll regret it.”

I turned.

“Why?”

“Because people will see your husband injured.”

“They’ll see me slapped.”

“They’ll see you instructing Brooklyn to lie.”

“They’ll see the truth.”

Melissa stood.

“You think truth makes people powerful?”

“No.”

I opened the door.

“But it makes liars nervous.”

Outside the building, Evelyn received an urgent message from Detective Moreno.

The license plate from the black sedan had been identified.

The vehicle belonged to a private investigation company.

The person who hired them had used a Harrington corporate account.

And the authorization came directly from Melissa.

The photograph delivered to my parents’ house had suddenly become much more than intimidation.

It had become evidence.
