Chapter 5 - The First Thirty SecondsThe footage arrived the next morning.

Detective Moreno would not allow anyone outside the investigation to access the complete files yet.

But Evelyn and I were invited to watch the relevant kitchen segment.

I sat in a dark interview room facing a monitor.

My hands trembled.

A timestamp appeared.

12:54:18 PM.

There I was.

Carrying a large bowl toward the dining room.

Brooklyn stood near the table.

On camera, her behavior looked even more deliberate than I remembered.

She glanced at me.

Then she glanced at Melissa.

Melissa gave the smallest nod.

Brooklyn stepped backward.

Directly into my path.

Her shoulder hit mine.

The bowl tilted.

Soup poured across the carpet.

Brooklyn immediately grabbed her dress.

Then she started shouting.

I felt Evelyn’s hand touch my arm.

“Keep watching.”

Callan entered the frame.

The argument unfolded exactly as I had described it.

Brooklyn cried.

Melissa accused.

I refused to apologize.

Callan walked toward me.

Then came the moment I had been dreading.

His hand moved.

The slap landed.

Even watching it happen to myself made my body recoil.

On the recording, nobody rushed toward me.

Nobody looked shocked.

Brooklyn smiled.

Melissa simply lifted her wineglass.

Then Callan pointed toward the hallway.

His voice was clearly captured by the microphone.

“Apologize or get out.”

I answered.

“I’m not apologizing for her lie.”

Callan grabbed my wrist.

The camera angle showed everything.

I tried to pull free.

He tightened his grip.

I stepped backward.

He moved forward.

His hip struck the edge of the counter.

His forearm clipped the pan handle.

The pan spun sideways.

Hot oil splashed.

Callan screamed.

I immediately grabbed a towel.

I tried to help him.

Melissa shoved me away.

The recording continued.

Brooklyn screamed for someone to call 911.

Then came something none of us expected.

Melissa turned toward Brooklyn.

Her voice was low.

But the microphone captured it.

“Tell them she threw it.”

Brooklyn froze.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“She threw it.”

My entire body went cold.

On screen, Brooklyn glanced toward me.

I was kneeling several feet away, crying and trying to tell the emergency dispatcher what had happened.

Brooklyn whispered.

“But she didn’t.”

Melissa grabbed her arm.

“Do you want Callan losing everything because of her?”

Brooklyn swallowed.

Then she nodded.

Detective Moreno paused the video.

Nobody spoke.

Evelyn finally exhaled.

“There it is.”

My voice shook.

“Everything?”

“No.”

She looked at Detective Moreno.

“That is attempted witness coaching recorded minutes after the event.”

The detective nodded.

“And there’s more.”

She moved the timeline backward.

11:38 AM.

The kitchen was empty except for Melissa and Brooklyn.

Melissa poured herself coffee.

Brooklyn sat at the island.

Then Melissa said something that changed the entire case.

“Today, he chooses.”

Brooklyn smiled.

“And if she refuses?”

May you like

Melissa answered without hesitation.

“Then we give him a reason to send her home.”
