Chapter 17 - Claire Finally Answered.

"Hello, Margaret."
Claire's voice was calm.
Daniel sat beside her but did not speak.
He could hear his mother's breathing through the phone.
Margaret sounded surprised that Claire had answered at all.
"Where is Daniel?"
Claire looked at him.
"Right here."
"Put him on."
"No."
The word came easily.
Daniel saw Claire register that fact herself.
Margaret paused.
"Excuse me?"
Claire looked down at the new apartment key in her hand.
"You called me."
"So talk to me."
Margaret's voice hardened.
"You have no idea what you have done to this family."
Claire felt the old pressure rise in her chest.
She breathed through it.
"I didn't create the board review."
"Daniel did this because of you."
"No."
"He left his job because of you."
"He left because he didn't want you controlling our home through his paycheck."
"He turned against me because you poisoned him."
Claire glanced at Daniel.
He looked angry, but he stayed silent because this was her conversation.
"Margaret, you told me for years that Daniel would leave me."
The line went quiet.
Claire continued.
"You told me I embarrassed him."
"You told me I didn't fit the family."
"You told me you knew what he really thought about me."
"Then you told him I would leave when the money disappeared."
Margaret interrupted.
"I was warning both of you."
"Against what?"
"Reality."
Claire almost laughed.
"No."
"You were making both of us afraid."
"And when we were afraid, you got to be the person with all the answers."
Daniel looked at Claire with something close to awe.
Margaret's breathing changed.
"You think you understand me after three years?"
"I understand what you did to me."
"That's enough."
Margaret became very quiet.
Then her voice softened in a way Claire had learned to fear more than shouting.
"You are destroying Daniel's inheritance."
Claire looked around the small rental apartment.
There were moving boxes everywhere.
Their couch had not arrived.
The refrigerator hummed too loudly.
The baby monitor sat on a cardboard box because they had not bought a side table yet.
Claire smiled.
"Then maybe we don't need it."
Margaret lost patience.
"Don't be childish."
"You have a baby."
"You need stability."
"You need family."
Claire's voice stayed even.
"Family should not require me to be afraid of answering the door."
Margaret said nothing.
Claire continued.
"Family should not track when I'm home alone."
"Family should not enter my apartment without asking."
"Family should not use a missing bracelet to make people suspicious of me."
"And family should never put me in a position where I am holding my crying baby and a stack of dishes while someone decides I deserve to be hit for asking to sit down."
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
The sentence brought the birthday room back with painful clarity.
Margaret answered in a low voice.
"I should not have slapped you."
Claire went completely still.
It was the first direct acknowledgment Margaret had made.
No unfortunate reflex.
No difficult afternoon.
No correction.
Margaret had finally used the word herself.
Claire did not rush to accept it.
"No," she said.
"You shouldn't have."
Margaret seemed to expect more.
When Claire offered nothing, she continued.
"But you embarrassed me in my own home."
There it was.
The apology collapsed before it was finished.
Claire looked at Daniel.
He saw the disappointment in her face.
"Margaret, I'm going to tell you what happens next."
"You don't give me instructions."
Claire almost smiled.
"These aren't instructions for you."
"They're boundaries for me."
Margaret went silent again.
"You do not come to our new home unless we invite you."
"You do not contact my clients."
"You do not ask employees or relatives to report where I am."
"You do not use the baby to force conversations with us."
"And until you can speak about what happened without blaming me for your choices, you will not be alone with our daughter."
Margaret inhaled sharply.
"You cannot keep my granddaughter from me."
Claire's voice stayed steady.
"Daniel and I decide who spends time with our child."
Margaret tried a different direction.
"Daniel, are you listening to this?"
Daniel finally spoke.
"Every word."
"And you're allowing it?"
"I'm agreeing with it."
Margaret's voice broke for the first time.
It was subtle.
Barely there.
"So that's it?"
Daniel looked at Claire before answering.
"For now, yes."
Margaret hung up.
Claire held the phone in her hand for several seconds.
Then she put it down.
Her whole body began trembling.
Daniel moved closer.
"You okay?"
Claire laughed through sudden tears.
"I think so."
"You were incredible."
"I was terrified."
"Those can happen at the same time."
Claire leaned against him.
The baby made a soft sound through the monitor.
Daniel kissed Claire's hair.
"New rule."
"What?"
"Nobody in this apartment balances plates while holding the baby."
Claire laughed harder.
"That's a very specific rule."
"I'm passionate about it."
They sat together on the floor among moving boxes until the baby settled again.
The next morning, Aunt Linda called Claire directly.
"I heard you spoke to Margaret."
Claire closed her eyes.
"How?"
"Margaret called me afterward."
Claire expected another round of family pressure.
Instead Linda said something unexpected.
"She admitted she slapped you."
Claire sat up.
"She what?"
"Not gracefully."
"She still said you pushed her too far."
"But she admitted it."
Linda paused.
"And I told her that blaming you afterward didn't make the admission an apology."
Claire smiled faintly.
"Thank you."
Linda's voice softened.
"I should have defended you long before your husband came through that door."
Claire appreciated the sentence because it did not ask her to erase the past in exchange for it.
"Thank you for saying that."
After the call, Daniel came in carrying coffee and an envelope.
"This was delivered downstairs."
Claire looked at the return address.
Hartwell Development - Independent Review Committee.
Inside was a request for Claire to provide a voluntary statement regarding the family risk file.
She read the first page.
Then a smaller note fell out.
It was handwritten by Samuel Price.
Claire, there is something in the file we did not show Daniel that night because we had not verified it.
May you like
We have verified it now.
Please call me before speaking to anyone else.
