Chapter 6 - Someone Else Had a Key.

Daniel reached the hotel in twelve minutes.
He left the car with the valet and ran through the lobby without waiting for the claim ticket.
Claire opened the room only after he gave his name through the door.
The chain was still latched.
Daniel stepped inside and locked everything behind him.
The baby was asleep in the crib again.
Claire stood near the window with both arms folded tightly across herself.
"Tell me exactly what happened."
Claire pointed toward the door.
"Someone knocked three times."
"I thought it was housekeeping."
"When I asked who it was, a man said he had a delivery from your mother."
Daniel frowned.
"What delivery?"
"He wouldn't say."
"Then he tried the handle."
Daniel looked at the lock.
"Did he open it?"
"No."
"The chain never moved."
"I called the front desk, and he left before security came upstairs."
Daniel sat beside Claire.
"You did exactly the right thing."
She looked toward his phone.
"What did your mother send you?"
Daniel showed her the photograph of the old tablet on their apartment counter.
Claire stared at it.
"I left that in the desk drawer."
"Was the drawer locked?"
"Yes."
Daniel's expression hardened.
The tablet did not contain the only copies of the recordings.
Claire had backed everything up online after Rebecca convinced her to protect the files months earlier.
But Margaret did not know that.
The photograph had been meant to scare them.
It worked differently than Margaret intended.
For Daniel, it turned uncertainty into clarity.
His mother had entered their home while they were away.
She had opened Claire's desk.
She had found a private device.
Then she had photographed it and sent the picture as a warning.
"We're not going back there alone," Daniel said.
Claire nodded.
"I don't want anything from that apartment badly enough to walk in there tonight."
Daniel called the front desk and asked for the security manager.
A manager named Luis came upstairs within minutes.
He reviewed the hallway camera footage with them on a hotel tablet.
The man outside their room wore a gray suit and carried a small envelope.
He never touched the lock with a key.
He only tested the handle once after Claire refused to open the door.
Luis paused the video on the man's face.
"Do either of you know him?"
Claire shook her head.
Daniel did too.
"Did he say who sent him downstairs?"
Luis checked his notes.
"He told the desk he was delivering documents for Hartwell Family Residential Trust."
Daniel stared at him.
"Documents?"
"That's what he said."
Luis handed Daniel the envelope the man had left at reception after security approached.
Daniel opened it carefully.
Inside was a formal notice from the trust.
It stated that his authorization to occupy the apartment was under review.
It also instructed him to contact the trustee regarding personal property stored there.
Claire read it over his shoulder.
"She prepared this already?"
Daniel checked the date.
"It was printed this morning."
Margaret had not reacted emotionally after the family meeting.
She had gone straight to paperwork.
That realization frightened Daniel more than shouting would have.
"She expected me to choose the apartment," he said.
Claire looked at him.
"Over us?"
"Over leaving her control."
He sat at the desk and called an attorney recommended by Uncle Thomas.
Her name was Elise Monroe.
She answered personally after Thomas texted her that the matter was urgent.
Daniel explained the trust notice, the apartment, the photograph, and the family meeting.
Elise listened without interrupting.
"First," she said, "do not sign anything."
"Second, save every message."
"Third, the trust owning the apartment does not automatically give the trustee unlimited rights over your personal property or privacy."
Daniel glanced at Claire.
"Can we retrieve our things?"
"Yes, but don't turn it into a confrontation."
"We'll arrange a documented pickup."
Daniel relaxed slightly.
Then Elise asked a question that changed the direction of the conversation.
"Who drafted your father's estate plan?"
Daniel looked at the ceiling.
"I don't know."
"My mother handled it after he died."
Elise became quiet.
"Your mother handled the estate, or your mother was the attorney?"
"Handled it as executor."
"Different issue."
"Find the name of the lawyer who represented your father before his death."
Daniel remembered Aunt Linda's comment about his father changing the estate structure.
"Why?"
"Because if your father told you the apartment was yours, I want to know whether he meant emotionally or legally."
Daniel ended the call and looked at Claire.
"You remember Dad telling us the apartment was ours after the wedding?"
Claire nodded.
"He gave you the key in the hospital."
Daniel had forgotten that detail.
His father had been receiving treatment at the time.
Robert Hartwell had placed a brass key in Daniel's hand and smiled weakly.
"A place of your own," he had said.
Daniel had assumed the transfer paperwork was already complete.
Now he wondered whether his father had intended one final step that never happened.
Claire touched Daniel's hand.
"There's something else about the tablet."
"What?"
"The recordings aren't the most important thing saved on it."
Daniel stared at her.
"What is?"
May you like
Claire took a slow breath.
"A video from the day your father gave you that key."
