Chapter 4 - The Family Meeting.

Margaret scheduled the family meeting for ten o'clock the next morning.

Daniel arrived at ten fifteen.

He did it deliberately.

For thirty years, his mother had taught him that keeping Margaret Hartwell waiting was the same as insulting her.

He wanted the first message of the day to be clear.

Claire did not come with him.

They had agreed that she did not owe anyone another appearance in that house.

The baby stayed with her at the hotel.

Rebecca met Daniel outside near the garage.

"She's furious you're late."

Daniel looked at his sister.

"Good morning to you too."

Rebecca gave a nervous laugh.

It was the first normal sound either of them had made since the party.

Inside, Margaret had arranged everyone in the formal sitting room instead of the dining room.

She wore a cream suit and a new diamond brooch.

There was no trace of birthday cake on her.

Aunt Linda sat near the fireplace.

Uncle Thomas stood by the window.

Several cousins occupied the long sofa.

Margaret remained standing.

"How generous of you to join us."

Daniel sat in an empty chair.

"Where's Claire?" Margaret asked.

"Not here."

"This concerns her."

"Then you should have treated her like a person when she was here."

Aunt Linda looked down to hide a reaction.

Margaret noticed.

"I asked all of you here because yesterday's spectacle has created a false impression."

Daniel folded his hands.

"Which part was false?"

"Claire has manipulated you against your own family."

"That's an opinion."

"I have evidence."

Margaret picked up a folder from the coffee table.

She removed several printed screenshots.

"These are messages Claire sent about me."

Daniel took them.

The messages were real.

Claire had sent them to Rebecca months earlier.

One said Margaret terrified her.

Another said she dreaded family dinners.

A third said she wished Daniel would accept a job in another state.

Margaret watched Daniel's face carefully.

"Does that sound like a woman trying to keep this family together?"

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

"Did you give her these?"

Rebecca's eyes widened.

"No."

Margaret stepped in quickly.

"That's irrelevant."

"It's extremely relevant," Daniel replied.

He held up the papers.

"These were private messages to Rebecca."

"How did you get them?"

Margaret's expression barely moved.

"Rebecca left her tablet here."

Rebecca stood.

"You went through my messages?"

"I was worried about you."

"You were spying on me."

Margaret ignored her.

"Daniel, focus."

Daniel placed the screenshots on the table.

"I am focused."

He pulled Claire's old phone from his jacket pocket.

Margaret's eyes flickered toward it.

Daniel noticed.

"Do you recognize this?"

"Why would I?"

Daniel tapped the screen.

Margaret's recorded voice filled the room.

"If you want to stay married to my son, Claire, you'll learn your place."

Aunt Linda's head snapped up.

Uncle Thomas closed his eyes.

Margaret's face went blank.

Daniel played another.

"Don't mistake Daniel's kindness for permanent devotion."

Then another.

"A woman who marries into this family should understand gratitude."

Margaret reached toward the phone.

"Turn that off."

Daniel did.

"There are seventy-three."

Nobody spoke.

Margaret recovered quickly.

"Context matters."

"Then give us the context."

She looked around the room.

"Claire is difficult."

Aunt Linda finally spoke.

"Margaret, stop."

Margaret turned toward her sister-in-law.

"Excuse me?"

Linda stood slowly.

"You used my missing bracelet to make people suspicious of Claire."

Margaret's face hardened.

"I did no such thing."

"You told me she had been near my bedroom that night."

"She had."

"You told Thomas the same thing."

Thomas nodded once.

Linda continued.

"And then I found the bracelet in your jewelry cabinet."

Margaret's lips tightened.

"I explained that."

"You said you took it for safekeeping."

"Correct."

"So why did you keep suggesting Claire took it after you knew where it was?"

Margaret looked at Daniel.

"This is absurd."

Rebecca stepped forward.

"No, Mom."

"It's finally specific."

Cousin Mark cleared his throat from the sofa.

Everyone turned toward him.

"I saw something at Thanksgiving," he said.

Margaret stared at him.

Mark continued anyway.

"Claire was trying to feed the baby upstairs. You followed her and told her she was being rude to the family."

Claire had never told Daniel about that.

Mark looked uncomfortable.

"I should have said something then."

Margaret's eyes swept across the room as if betrayal were spreading chair by chair.

For the first time, Margaret looked outnumbered.

Daniel did not enjoy it.

He only felt tired.

He stood.

"I'm resigning from Hartwell Development."

That changed everything.

Margaret's expression cracked.

"Don't be ridiculous."

"I'm serious."

"That company is your future."

"No."

Daniel looked directly at her.

"It's the leash you keep calling my future."

Uncle Thomas inhaled sharply.

Margaret stepped closer.

"If you resign, you lose your salary, your bonus, and access to the family housing trust."

Daniel nodded.

"Then I lose them."

Margaret stared at him.

Then a strange calm returned to her face.

"You may want to speak to your attorney before making promises you can't afford."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Margaret picked up another folder.

This one was thicker.

May you like

She placed it in front of him.

"It means the apartment you think you own isn't yours."
