Chapter 12 - THE GRAVE THAT WAS NOT A GRAVEBy sunrise, federal agents surrounded the Vaughn family cemetery.

The property had been closed for decades.

Tall weeds covered the paths.

Gabriel and Leah Vaughn’s memorial stones stood beside an empty grave.

Neither body had ever been buried there.

Maya stood before her father’s name.

GABRIEL ALEXANDER VAUGHN.

BELOVED HUSBAND, FATHER, SOLDIER, AND INVENTOR.

The date of death had been estimated from the night of the ambush.

Maya touched the engraved stone.

“He may have been alive every day people came here to mourn him.”

Marcus looked toward the monument.

“Gabriel designed this cemetery after his parents died.”

“He said every family secret eventually ended beneath stone.”

The archive code opened a concealed panel behind the memorial.

Stone shifted slowly.

A narrow staircase appeared.

Air rose from below.

Not stale air.

Filtered air.

The underground facility still had electricity.

Agents descended first.

Maya followed Marcus.

The staircase led to a reinforced corridor containing old military equipment.

The walls displayed photographs of Vaughn aircraft prototypes.

A red light blinked above a sealed medical room.

Agent Ortiz entered the code from the medal.

The door opened.

A man lay inside a glass medical chamber.

His hair and beard were white.

His body was thin.

Machines controlled his breathing.

Marcus staggered.

“Gabriel.”

Maya stood beside the chamber.

The man looked nothing like the strong officer in Eleanor’s photographs.

Yet his eyes moved beneath closed lids.

He was alive.

A doctor examined the monitors.

“He appears to be in a medically induced state.”

“For how long?” Maya asked.

“Based on the equipment, possibly years.”

A computer beside the chamber displayed a biometric lock.

The screen requested FAMILY AUTHORIZATION.

Maya placed her hand on the scanner.

The machine rejected it.

Eleanor tried next.

Rejected.

Marcus examined the medal.

“Gabriel used two-part security.”

Maya remembered the lullaby from her childhood.

The words returned slowly.

Stars above.

Wings below.

Home is where the brave winds blow.

She spoke the final line aloud.

“Vaughn blood always returns.”

The computer activated.

A needle withdrew from Gabriel’s arm.

The sedation cycle ended.

The medical team prepared him for transport.

Agent Ortiz searched the surrounding rooms.

She found boxes of legal documents.

Original Vaughn Trust certificates.

Patent records.

Audio recordings.

Photographs from County Road Nine.

Everything Victoria and Charles Sterling had tried to destroy had been preserved underground.

A final video appeared on the archive computer.

Gabriel sat in front of the camera twenty-four years earlier.

Blood covered one side of his face.

“If Amelia survives, the Vaughn Trust belongs entirely to her.”

“No merger.”

“No transfer.”

“No Sterling claim can override her inheritance.”

He looked directly into the lens.

“Charles and Victoria Sterling have compromised Vaughn Aerospace.”

“They sold restricted technology through private buyers.”

“They intend to use my disappearance to seize control.”

A noise sounded behind him.

Gabriel glanced toward the door.

“If Marcus finds this, protect my daughter.”

The video ended.

Ortiz opened another folder.

It contained the agreement announced at the banquet.

The Sterling-Vaughn merger depended on Victoria controlling the missing Vaughn shares.

But those shares legally belonged to Maya.

The banquet had not merely celebrated a merger.

It had been Victoria’s final attempt to transfer Maya’s inheritance before anyone discovered she was alive.

Maya looked toward her unconscious father.

For twenty-four years, Victoria had called her worthless because admitting Maya’s worth would destroy the Sterling empire.

Agent Ortiz received a message from the hospital.

Ethan had awakened.

He was asking to speak with Maya.

Before Maya could respond, another agent entered the archive room.

“We have a problem.”

“What happened?”

“Victoria Sterling’s transport vehicle was attacked.”

Maya’s stomach tightened.

“Did she escape?”

May you like

The agent nodded.

“And she took the original red ledger with her.”
