Chapter 7 - THE HOUSE AT LAKE MERCERDawn broke as the convoy approached Lake Mercer.

Fog covered the water.
The abandoned research property stood on a narrow peninsula surrounded by rusted fencing.
The original Vaughn emblem had been removed from the gate.
Its outline remained visible in the metal.
Maya recognized the shape.
It matched the insignia on the medal.
The main house appeared empty.
A small boathouse stood near the shoreline.
Marcus studied the property through binoculars.
“No visible movement.”
Ortiz positioned agents around the perimeter.
Maya remained behind an armored vehicle.
This time, she did not argue.
Her mother needed her alive.
The front door of the house had been left open.
Inside, dust covered the furniture.
Old blueprints remained pinned to the walls.
Photographs of experimental aircraft had faded beneath cracked glass.
Maya entered after the agents cleared the first floor.
The house smelled of cedar and machine oil.
A memory surfaced.
She saw herself racing through the hallway.
A man chased her while pretending to be an airplane.
Her father.
She could almost hear his laughter.
“This was my home,” she whispered.
Marcus nodded.
“Gabriel worked here before Vaughn Aerospace moved its headquarters.”
Maya found height marks carved into a kitchen doorway.
AMELIA appeared beside several dates.
The final mark had been made three days before the ambush.
Leah had written beneath it.
OUR BRAVE GIRL.
Maya pressed her forehead against the wood.
Victoria had spent years telling her that she came from nothing.
Yet this house proved she had been loved beyond measure.
A shout came from the basement.
Agents had discovered a concealed elevator behind a storage wall.
The elevator required a six-digit code.
Marcus examined the numbers from the medal.
The first six digits opened the doors.
The elevator descended farther than expected.
Twenty feet.
Forty feet.
Sixty feet.
When the doors opened, they revealed an underground laboratory.
Emergency lights glowed along a narrow passage.
Water dripped from the ceiling.
The facility had been built beneath the lake.
Maya remembered the words scratched beneath her mother’s windowsill.
Gabriel lives below the water.
Agents searched the laboratory.
They found medical equipment.
Restraints.
Storage cabinets filled with expired medication.
A room at the end of the passage contained a bed.
Someone had lived there for years.
The wall was covered with mathematical equations.
A camera pointed toward the mattress.
Marcus touched a recent coffee cup.
“It is still warm.”
A monitor suddenly turned on.
Victoria Sterling appeared on the screen.
She was still at the banquet hall.
The image had been recorded in advance.
“If you are watching this, Amelia survived longer than expected.”
Maya’s hands curled into fists.
Victoria continued.
“Your father believed truth was stronger than power.”
“He was wrong.”
“He trusted laws written by men who could be purchased.”
“He trusted partners who needed what he owned.”
“He trusted Marcus Vance.”
Marcus’s face tightened.
“He should not have.”
The screen changed.
A live camera feed appeared.
Leah Vaughn sat unconscious inside the medical transport van.
Gerald drove.
Dr. Keller sat beside her.
A digital clock showed the current time.
They had not taken her to Lake Mercer.
The recording had been designed to delay the search.
A second image appeared.
Ethan sat inside the Sterling estate ballroom.
Victoria stood behind him.
Her hand rested on his shoulder.
Victoria’s recorded voice continued.
“One child escaped me twenty-four years ago.”
“I will not make the same mistake twice.”
The live feed changed again.
Noah was shown sleeping in Eleanor Vaughn’s arms.
A red targeting dot moved slowly across the baby’s blanket.
Maya’s blood turned cold.
Victoria had people inside the banquet hall.
Marcus grabbed his phone.
Before he could call, the underground doors slammed shut.
May you like
Water began pouring through vents in the walls.
The laboratory was flooding.
