Chapter 2 - THE MARRIAGE BUILT ON A LIEMaya felt the ballroom tilt beneath her feet.

The music had stopped.

The doors were locked.

Federal agents surrounded Victoria.

Yet none of it felt as terrifying as the man standing in front of Maya.

Ethan had known.

Perhaps not everything.

But enough to lie.

Enough to marry her under false pretenses.

“How long?” Maya asked.

Ethan lowered his eyes.

“Since before our first date.”

The confession struck harder than Victoria’s slap.

Maya remembered the coffee shop where Ethan had introduced himself.

She remembered how he had seemed interested in the small silver object around her neck.

She had believed he was admiring her jewelry.

Now she understood that he had been examining evidence.

“My mother saw you at the Brighton Children’s Home charity auction,” Ethan said.

“You were speaking about the foster-care scholarship program.”

“You were wearing the medal.”

“She recognized the insignia.”

Maya’s baby, Noah, whimpered against her shoulder.

Maya gently rocked him while staring at her husband.

“What did she tell you?”

“She told me the medal might be connected to a former Sterling business partner.”

“She asked me to learn where you got it.”

“And you decided marrying me was the easiest way?”

“No.”

Ethan took a step toward her.

She stepped back.

He stopped immediately.

“At first, I only agreed to introduce myself.”

“Then I fell in love with you.”

“Do not use love to make this sound cleaner.”

Maya’s voice remained quiet.

That made it more dangerous.

“You watched me search for my family.”

“You held me while I cried after another record search failed.”

“You told me my past did not matter.”

“All that time, you knew my past terrified your mother.”

Ethan had no defense.

Across the ballroom, Special Agent Lena Ortiz directed investigators toward Victoria’s private office.

Victoria stood between two agents, still perfectly composed.

“This is an outrageous abuse of authority,” she announced.

“My attorneys will have every person involved in this spectacle removed from service.”

Colonel Vance walked toward her.

“Your attorneys cannot erase Gabriel Vaughn’s medal.”

“A medal proves nothing.”

“It proves Amelia survived.”

“Even if she is Amelia, that has nothing to do with me.”

Marcus studied Victoria’s face.

“You just admitted the possibility without asking who Amelia was.”

A collective breath moved through the room.

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

Agent Ortiz stepped closer.

“Mrs. Sterling, do not leave the ballroom.”

“I am not under arrest.”

“Not yet.”

Those two words finally disturbed Victoria’s calm.

Marcus returned to Maya.

“There is someone who can help confirm your identity.”

“Who?”

“Gabriel’s younger sister.”

Maya stopped breathing.

“Someone from my family is alive?”

“Eleanor Vaughn has spent twenty-four years searching for you.”

Marcus’s eyes filled with regret.

“She refused to hold a funeral.”

“She said she would know if her niece was dead.”

“Where is she?”

“On her way here.”

Maya looked down at the medal.

She had worn it through every foster placement.

Through every lonely birthday.

Through graduation.

Through her wedding.

She had once believed it was proof that someone had loved her.

Now it was proof that someone had hunted her family.

Agent Ortiz approached with a clear evidence bag.

“We need to examine the medal.”

Maya hesitated.

It was the only thing she had owned before becoming Maya.

Marcus nodded reassuringly.

“They will return it.”

Maya placed the medal into the bag.

As Ortiz turned it beneath the light, she noticed a narrow seam along the blackened edge.

“This has a compartment.”

Marcus frowned.

“It never had one before.”

An evidence technician brought a small tool.

The blackened edge was carefully lifted.

A paper strip, folded smaller than a fingernail, slid from inside.

The paper had been protected from rain and fire for twenty-four years.

Ortiz unfolded it beneath a magnifying lens.

A series of numbers appeared.

Beneath the numbers were four handwritten words.

TRUST ONLY MARCUS VANCE.

Marcus stared at Gabriel’s handwriting.

Then the final line was revealed.

VICTORIA KNOWS THE ROAD.

Victoria Sterling suddenly turned toward the service exit.

One of the agents blocked her path.

For the first time that evening, the great matriarch looked afraid.
