Chapter 12 - The Hearing.

The courtroom was smaller than I expected.

Margaret sat behind Evan.

Lauren sat beside her.

They looked strangely alike from a distance.

Both blonde.

Both perfectly composed.

Both dressed as if they had arrived for a business meeting instead of a custody hearing involving a traumatized toddler.

Evan didn’t look at me.

Dana did.

“Breathe.”

I nodded.

The judge reviewed the emergency order.

Then the video played.

I hated hearing it again.

The crack.

Maisie’s scream.

Margaret’s voice.

Maybe now you’ll learn.

Then my three slaps against Evan.

I felt everyone looking at me.

Dana had warned me not to justify it.

So when asked, I answered simply.

“Yes.”

“I struck my husband.”

“Three times?”

“Yes.”

“Do you believe that was appropriate?”

“No.”

“Why did you do it?”

“I had just watched his mother strike our two-year-old daughter while he remained seated.”

“I lost control.”

“I regret hitting him.”

“I do not regret removing my daughter.”

The judge nodded.

Evan testified next.

He described me as emotional.

Controlling.

Hostile toward his mother.

Then Dana stood.

“Mr. Hale, did you prepare a written file documenting your wife’s alleged instability?”

Evan hesitated.

“My mother kept notes.”

“Did you contribute?”

“Sometimes.”

“For how long?”

“I don’t remember.”

Dana placed a document before him.

“Seventeen months?”

His jaw tightened.

“Possibly.”

“Were divorce proceedings underway seventeen months ago?”

“No.”

“Was your wife aware that you were documenting her?”

“No.”

“Was she aware that you had transferred marital funds to your mother?”

“No.”

“Was she aware that marital income had helped purchase property through Hale Consulting?”

Margaret leaned toward her lawyer.

Evan stared at Dana.

“I don’t know what she knew.”

Dana smiled slightly.

“Were you having an affair with Lauren Pierce?”

His lawyer objected.

The judge allowed limited questioning.

Evan admitted it.

Then Lauren testified.

She repeated her claim that she had seen me scream at Maisie.

Dana handed her a calendar.

“You stated June 14.”

“Yes.”

“Where were you?”

“At the Hale residence.”

“With Claire?”

“Yes.”

Dana handed the judge my airline record.

“Mrs. Hale was in Denver from June 13 through June 16.”

Lauren went pale.

Dana continued.

“You also stated September 8.”

Lauren swallowed.

“Yes.”

My attorney placed another document down.

“Mrs. Hale was admitted overnight at St. Anne’s Hospital following an appendectomy on September 7.”

Lauren’s lawyer whispered urgently.

Dana leaned closer.

“So when you said under oath that you personally witnessed these events, that was false.”

Lauren looked toward Margaret.

That movement mattered more than any answer.

The judge noticed.

“So who gave you those dates?”

Lauren said nothing.

The judge repeated the question.

“Ms. Pierce.”

Her voice broke.

“Margaret.”

The courtroom went completely still.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Evan whispered something I couldn’t hear.

Lauren started crying.

“She said those incidents happened.”

“She told me Claire would lie.”

“She said Maisie needed protection.”

Dana’s voice remained calm.

“Did you actually witness Mrs. Hale mistreat her daughter?”

Lauren shook her head.

“No.”

Margaret stood suddenly.

“This is ridiculous.”

The judge’s face hardened.

“Sit down.”

Margaret remained standing for one second too long.

Then she obeyed.

The temporary custody order remained.

Margaret was prohibited from contact with Maisie pending investigation.

Evan received supervised visitation.

As we left court, he caught up with me in the hallway.

“Claire.”

I stopped.

His face looked shattered.

“Mom went too far.”

I stared at him.

“No.”

“You went with her.”

Then I walked away.

Behind me, someone else called Margaret’s name.

It was a court officer.

He held a document.

May you like

She had just been served with a subpoena.

The basement room was finally going to be opened.
