Chapter 2 - The Message on Tessa’s Phone.

I should have left immediately.
Every instinct told me to get Maisie away from that house.
But something in Tessa’s face made me stop.
She looked frightened.
Not embarrassed.
Not uncomfortable.
Frightened.
“What is it?”
Tessa glanced at Evan.
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“Nothing,” he said.
Tessa ignored him.
She walked toward me and turned the phone around.
A screenshot filled the screen.
It showed an online banking transaction.
Our joint savings account.
Thirty-eight thousand dollars.
Transferred three weeks earlier.
The recipient was Margaret Hale.
For a moment, I didn’t understand what I was seeing.
Then I looked at Evan.
“What is this?”
He rubbed his cheek.
“We can talk about it at home.”
“We are talking now.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“That money was repayment.”
“For what?”
Nobody answered.
Maisie whimpered against my shoulder.
I shifted her weight carefully.
“Evan.”
He looked at his mother.
That was answer enough.
I felt something cold move through me.
“How much?”
“Claire.”
“How much money have you given her?”
“It wasn’t like that.”
“How much?”
He finally looked at me.
“About sixty.”
My stomach dropped.
“Sixty thousand dollars?”
He didn’t answer.
Tessa whispered.
“It’s more.”
Evan snapped toward her.
“Stay out of this.”
Tessa’s face hardened.
“I’ve stayed out of everything for years.”
She tapped her phone.
“There are transfers going back eleven months.”
My knees almost weakened.
We had been saving for a house.
We had postponed vacations.
I had worn the same winter coat for four years.
When our washing machine broke, Evan convinced me we couldn’t afford a new one.
We washed Maisie’s clothes at a laundromat for seven weeks.
All while he was sending our savings to his mother.
“Why?”
Margaret answered for him.
“Because family takes care of family.”
“I am his family.”
She gave me a small, poisonous smile.
“You married into it.”
Those four words explained the last eight years.
I had never been family to Margaret.
I had been a guest who stayed too long.
Tessa looked at me.
“There’s something else.”
Evan moved quickly.
“Tessa, shut up.”
She stared at him.
“No.”
Her voice shook, but she continued.
“Mom has been paying a lawyer.”
My heart began pounding.
“What lawyer?”
Tessa looked at Margaret.
“A family lawyer.”
The room suddenly felt smaller.
I looked at Evan.
“What have you done?”
He shook his head.
“Nothing.”
Tessa opened another message.
“My cousin works at the firm.”
Margaret’s face went white.
“She recognized Mom’s name after watching the livestream.”
Tessa swallowed.
“She said the consultations started four months ago.”
My arms tightened around Maisie.
“For what?”
Tessa hesitated.
Then she said the words that turned my fear into something much worse.
“Grandparent visitation.”
Margaret didn’t blink.
Evan looked away.
Tessa continued.
“And custody strategy.”
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
“You were planning to take my daughter?”
Margaret’s expression became calm again.
“We were preparing for the possibility that you would become unstable.”
I stared at her.
Then at Evan.
He still couldn’t look me in the eyes.
Suddenly the slap was no longer the beginning of this nightmare.
It was simply the moment the curtain had fallen.
I backed toward the door.
“You planned this.”
Evan took one step forward.
“Claire, listen to me.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
I opened the door.
Cold night air swept inside.
Tessa followed.
Margaret shouted after her.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
Tessa put on her coat.
“With Claire.”
Her mother stared at her.
“You choose that woman over your family and you will regret it.”
Tessa looked back.
Then she said something I would remember forever.
May you like
“She is leaving because you hurt a child.”
“I’m leaving because I finally realized you hurt all of us.”
