Chapter 7 - The File With My Name.

I sat on the edge of the bed.

My legs no longer trusted me.

Tessa flipped through the pages.

Every ordinary moment of my life had been turned into evidence.

March 17.

Claire became emotional during discussion about finances.

That was the day I discovered Evan had secretly opened another credit card.

April 2.

Claire consumed alcohol while caring for child.

I had one glass of wine at Easter dinner while seven other adults were present.

May 11.

Claire displayed aggressive behavior toward Evan.

That was the night he told Margaret she could decorate Maisie’s nursery without asking me.

September 6.

Claire isolated child from paternal grandmother.

That was after Margaret called Maisie “slow” because she wasn’t speaking full sentences at eighteen months.

Each entry erased what had actually happened.

Each one transformed my reaction into the problem.

At the bottom of several pages were Evan’s initials.

I looked at him.

“You helped her.”

He folded his arms.

“Mom told me to document conflict.”

“For custody?”

“In case things got worse.”

“Things?”

“Our marriage.”

I stared at him.

“You were preparing to take Maisie away from me while sleeping next to me every night.”

“That’s not what this was.”

“What was it?”

“Protection.”

“For who?”

He didn’t answer.

I stood.

“Where is the document box?”

“Mom’s.”

“Get it.”

“She won’t give it back if you’re acting like this.”

Tessa actually laughed.

“Do you hear yourself?”

Evan turned on her.

“You have no idea what marriage is.”

“No.”

Tessa’s expression hardened.

“But I know what blackmail looks like.”

He stepped closer.

“Get out of my house.”

“This is Claire’s house too.”

“I pay the mortgage.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He frowned.

“What?”

“My paycheck has covered half the mortgage for six years.”

“That doesn’t make it yours.”

I almost smiled.

The arrogance was astonishing.

“It literally does.”

His face tightened.

For the first time, I saw panic.

Not because he was losing me.

Because he was losing control of the story.

I photographed every page in the folder.

Evan tried to grab it.

Tessa moved between us.

“Touch her phone and I call the police.”

He backed away.

I packed clothes for Maisie.

Then clothes for myself.

Before leaving, I opened our desk drawer.

The checkbook was gone.

So were two external hard drives.

Evan watched me notice.

“Where are they?”

“I don’t know.”

I stared at him until he looked away.

That evening, Rachel emailed me a folder containing hundreds of files.

One audio recording was twenty-seven minutes long.

Tessa and I listened together.

Margaret’s younger voice filled the room.

“You will leave my son alone.”

Rachel answered.

“He asked you to leave our apartment.”

“He doesn’t know what he wants.”

“I do.”

“You think you can take him from his family?”

“I’m not taking him anywhere.”

Then Evan’s voice appeared.

“Mom, stop.”

Rachel began crying.

“Tell her to leave.”

Silence.

“Evan.”

Another silence.

Then he spoke.

“If Rachel keeps acting like this, we need to document it.”

Tessa covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

Rachel shouted.

“You’re both insane.”

Margaret laughed.

“There.”

“That’s exactly what we need.”

I stopped the recording.

I couldn’t breathe.

Then another email arrived.

This one came from my bank.

Your joint savings account has been closed.

I stared at the balance.

Zero dollars.

May you like

Evan hadn’t only given Margaret our savings.

He had emptied what remained that morning.
