Chapter 12 - Evelyn's SecretThe safe house surveillance system had been disabled eleven minutes before Evelyn vanished.

That required an administrator credential.

Avery's credential.

Sarah stood inside the empty kitchen while Brooks coordinated the search.

The pieces finally fit.

Avery had known the emergency protocol because he controlled it.

He had arranged Evelyn's escape.

Then he had moved her again before federal agents could question her fully.

The question was whether Evelyn had gone willingly the second time.

Sarah found her answer beneath the kitchen table.

A pearl.

One from Evelyn's necklace.

Evelyn had not been wearing pearls when Sarah arrived.

But Sarah knew that pearl.

Its clasp was scratched along one side.

James had given Evelyn the necklace for their tenth anniversary.

Sarah picked it up with gloved fingers.

Brooks looked over.

"She left it."

Sarah nodded.

"On purpose."

Brooks understood.

"A trail."

They searched the safe house carefully.

A second pearl lay near the back door.

A third outside beside the gravel drive.

The trail ended where a vehicle had been parked.

Sarah almost smiled despite the fear.

Evelyn was still fighting.

Traffic cameras identified Avery's blue SUV heading west.

State police joined the search.

At the same time, Daniel sent Brooks screenshots from Reed's stolen phone.

One message stood out.

Avery to Reed.

MITCHELL FOUND 317.

Another.

KESSLER WANTS THE WOMAN MOVED BEFORE SHE TALKS.

Brooks looked at Sarah.

"That's enough for a warrant."

Sarah asked.

"For Avery?"

"And Kessler."

Sarah felt seventeen years of silence begin to crack.

But Kessler was not easy to reach.

His attorney announced that the former senator was traveling and unavailable.

Federal agents discovered his private aircraft had filed a flight plan for Switzerland.

The plane had not yet departed.

Brooks called airport authorities.

"Ground it."

Sarah's phone rang.

Daniel again.

"You're running out of time."

Sarah stepped away.

"Where is Avery taking Evelyn?"

"Probably the old Northstar facility."

"Where?"

"West Virginia."

Sarah looked toward Brooks.

Daniel continued.

"Northstar owned a logistics warehouse outside Charles Town."

"Why take her there?"

"Because Kessler used it for meetings no one recorded."

"How do you know?"

"I attended them."

Sarah's expression hardened.

"Of course you did."

Daniel remained silent.

Sarah said.

"Send the address."

"I already did."

Her phone buzzed.

Sarah opened the location.

Brooks looked over.

"We can have tactical teams there in forty minutes."

Sarah nodded.

Daniel spoke again.

"Sarah."

She returned the phone to her ear.

"What?"

"If Avery knows federal agents are coming, he'll move her."

"Then stop calling people who leak information."

"No."

Daniel's voice tightened.

"Listen to me."

Sarah waited.

"The leak isn't federal."

"Then what?"

"Your military communications."

Sarah's expression changed.

"Rourke?"

"No."

"Who?"

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said.

"Captain Ellis."

Sarah froze.

Captain Nathan Ellis had worked beside her for four years.

He handled liaison scheduling.

He knew her travel.

Her meetings.

Her security clearance details.

He had also arranged her assignment to Brooks's task force after Rourke approved it.

Sarah felt betrayal burn through her.

"Proof."

"Reed's phone."

Another file arrived.

A payment record.

Monthly consulting payments from a shell company to Ellis's private LLC.

Brooks stared at the screen.

"We need military investigators."

Sarah nodded.

She called Rourke.

He answered immediately.

"Mitchell."

"Sir, isolate Captain Ellis."

Silence.

"Reason?"

Sarah sent the record.

Rourke received it.

His voice changed.

"Understood."

"Don't let him access communications."

"Already moving."

Sarah ended the call.

Brooks looked at her.

"You still want to go to West Virginia?"

Sarah nodded.

"She's my responsibility."

Brooks shook her head.

"She's a federal witness."

Sarah looked at her.

"You know what I mean."

Brooks did.

They drove west with a tactical convoy.

Forty-five minutes later, they reached the abandoned Northstar warehouse.

The property looked empty.

Rusting loading doors.

Broken windows.

Overgrown pavement.

Sarah waited behind cover while tactical officers entered.

Two minutes passed.

Then three.

A radio call came.

"Building clear."

Sarah's stomach dropped.

They went inside.

No Evelyn.

No Avery.

But someone had been there recently.

A folding table held bottled water.

A chair.

A discarded coat.

Evelyn's coat.

On the floor beneath it was another pearl.

Sarah picked it up.

"She was here."

Brooks scanned the room.

An agent called from a rear office.

"We found a vehicle route map."

The map showed several rural roads.

One destination had been circled.

A small private airfield.

Brooks immediately radioed state police.

Sarah looked at the map.

Then something else caught her attention.

Writing beneath the circled airfield.

Not Avery's handwriting.

Evelyn's.

Sarah recognized it from the notebook.

HE DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT THE TAPE.

Sarah stared.

"What tape?"

Brooks looked at her.

"The recorder tapes from Evelyn's box?"

Sarah remembered.

Federal technicians had taken them for digitization.

There were nine.

Eight contained ordinary family conversations.

The ninth had been damaged.

Technicians were still recovering it.

Sarah called the lab.

The analyst answered.

"Mitchell, we were about to contact you."

"What did you recover?"

"A conversation."

"Between whom?"

"Your father and Daniel Harrow."

Sarah's heartbeat increased.

"When?"

"According to embedded timestamp, the night before the crash."

Sarah gripped the phone.

"Play it."

Static filled the line.

Then James Mitchell's voice emerged from seventeen years in the past.

Daniel, you need to walk away from Kessler.

Daniel answered.

I can't.

James said.

You can always walk away.

Then Daniel.

Not when he owns the evidence.

James responded.

Then we take it from him.

More static.

Daniel's voice again.

What if he comes after Sarah?

Sarah closed her eyes.

James answered.

Then he'll learn what happens when he threatens my daughter.

Despite everything, Sarah almost laughed.

That sounded exactly like her father.

Then the recording shifted.

Daniel spoke.

There's something you don't know about Avery.

Sarah opened her eyes.

James replied.

What?

Static swallowed several seconds.

Then James's voice returned.

Are you sure?

Daniel answered.

I saw the transfer myself.

James said one final sentence.

Then Box 317 is compromised.

The recording ended.

Sarah looked at Brooks.

Box 317 had been compromised before James died.

Which meant James had known Avery could not be trusted.

Yet the evidence Sarah found there was still intact.

Sarah suddenly understood.

"Box 317 was bait."

Brooks stared.

Sarah continued.

"My father wanted whoever was watching him to believe that was his only backup."

"Then where did he put the real evidence?"

Sarah thought of the childhood fireplace.

The empty compartment.

The ledger Kessler had supposedly taken.

Then another possibility hit her.

"What if that ledger was bait too?"

Brooks frowned.

Sarah remembered James's final word.

The word Daniel had never revealed.

A password.

Not a location.

A password to something no one had found.

Sarah looked toward the road map.

Daniel knew the word.

And right now, Daniel was still missing.

May you like

But for the first time, Sarah no longer believed he was hiding from justice.

She believed he was trying to reach the real evidence before Kessler did.
