Chapter 7 - The Number 317Federal technicians found the hidden phone within an hour.

It had been taped beneath the bottom drawer of Evelyn's bedside cabinet.

The device was old, inexpensive, and almost completely empty.

No photographs.

No stored contacts.

No applications beyond basic messaging.

Only eleven outgoing texts existed.

Every one had been sent to the same number.

The recipient was saved as 317.

Brooks placed the phone on the marble desk.

"The number belongs to a prepaid device."

Sarah leaned against the desk.

"Can we locate it?"

"Last tower connection puts it near Georgetown."

Claire frowned.

"Mom doesn't know anyone there."

Sarah looked at the messages.

Most were short.

HE FOUND THE NOTEBOOK.

I THINK DANIEL KNOWS.

SARAH IS COMING TOMORROW.

Then the final message, sent twenty-two minutes before Evelyn disappeared.

NOW.

Sarah looked at Brooks.

"That's a distress signal."

"Looks like one."

"Whoever has the other phone may have helped her leave."

Claire looked relieved.

"So Daniel didn't take her?"

Brooks answered cautiously.

"We don't know that."

Sarah scrolled backward.

One response appeared from 317.

USE THE SERVICE ELEVATOR.

NO CAR.

WAIT FOR BLUE.

Claire stared.

"What does blue mean?"

Sarah did not know.

Then one of the agents approached.

"We have security footage."

They gathered around a laptop.

The penthouse building had cameras throughout the parking structure, elevators, and service corridors.

At 10:42 a.m., Evelyn appeared in the service hallway wearing a dark coat over her beige outfit.

She carried no suitcase.

No handbag.

Only the red notebook.

Sarah looked down at the notebook now sitting on the desk.

"No."

Brooks paused the footage.

"What?"

"She didn't take that."

Claire looked.

"That's Mom's notebook."

Sarah held up the one they had found.

"Then this is a copy."

Brooks immediately put on gloves.

Sarah turned back to the footage.

At 10:45, Evelyn entered a service elevator.

At 10:48, the parking camera caught her exiting through the loading level.

A blue SUV waited.

The rear door opened.

Evelyn climbed inside voluntarily.

The vehicle left.

Claire exhaled.

"She wasn't forced."

Sarah remained cautious.

"Not on camera."

The next clip began three minutes later.

Daniel appeared in the same service corridor.

He looked angry.

He checked the elevator.

Then his phone.

Then he returned upstairs.

Claire frowned.

"So he didn't leave with her."

Brooks nodded.

"He left seven minutes later through the main garage."

Sarah stared at Daniel's footage.

He had not abducted Evelyn.

He had been looking for her.

That changed everything.

Brooks received a call.

She listened.

Then looked at Sarah.

"They found Daniel's car."

"Where?"

"Airport parking."

Claire stood.

"He left the country?"

"No."

Brooks shook her head.

"His passport has a federal hold."

Sarah understood.

"He wanted us to think he left."

Brooks nodded.

"Possibly."

Claire looked confused.

"Then where is he?"

Sarah looked back at Evelyn getting into the blue SUV.

"Probably looking for the same person we are."

The SUV plate had been partially obscured, but analysts identified the vehicle within another hour.

It belonged to a private security firm.

Blue Ridge Protective Services.

The company's managing director was retired Colonel Thomas Avery.

Sarah knew the name immediately.

Thomas Avery had served with her father.

He had spoken at James's memorial.

Sarah had not seen him in more than a decade.

Brooks called him.

No answer.

They drove to the company office.

It was nearly empty.

A receptionist said Avery had left that morning and canceled his appointments.

Sarah showed Evelyn's photograph.

The receptionist hesitated.

"Was she with Colonel Avery?"

"I can't discuss clients."

Brooks displayed federal credentials.

"Now you can."

The receptionist swallowed.

"Yes."

Sarah felt a rush of relief.

"Where did he take her?"

"I don't know."

"When did she contact him?"

"She has been a client for years."

Sarah stared.

"Years?"

The receptionist nodded.

"Colonel Avery had standing instructions."

"What instructions?"

"If Mrs. Harrow ever sent the code 317, we were supposed to move her to a secure location."

Claire looked at Sarah.

"My mother planned this."

Sarah nodded.

"Long ago."

The receptionist continued.

"She also left instructions for someone named Sarah Mitchell."

Sarah's heartbeat changed.

"What instructions?"

The receptionist opened a locked cabinet.

She removed a sealed envelope.

Sarah accepted it.

The handwriting was Evelyn's.

Sarah opened the letter.

Sarah,

If you are reading this, Daniel finally realized what 317 meant.

Do not come looking for me until you understand one thing.

Daniel is not the person I fear most.

Sarah stopped.

Brooks leaned closer.

The next line was underlined.

Grant Vale has been protecting someone above Daniel for seventeen years.

Sarah remembered the photograph.

Senator Kessler.

The voice recorder tapes.

The numbered account.

The rushed court order.

She continued.

James believed Daniel was stealing money.

He was partly right.

Daniel was moving money.

But the money was not his.

Robert Kessler used Daniel as the bridge between Northstar and people who could not afford to appear in the records.

Sarah felt the investigation expand beneath her feet.

Evelyn's letter continued.

Daniel became trapped.

Then he became useful.

Then he became ambitious.

Eventually, I could no longer tell whether he was a victim or a partner.

Sarah read the final paragraph.

If Kessler knows you have Box 317, he will come for it.

Do not trust Grant.

Do not trust Daniel.

And until I can explain everything, do not trust me either.

Sarah lowered the letter.

Claire looked shaken.

"Where is Mom?"

The receptionist answered.

"Colonel Avery didn't tell us."

Brooks asked.

"How do we contact him?"

The receptionist hesitated.

Then she handed Sarah a satellite number.

Before Sarah could call, her own phone rang.

Unknown caller.

She answered.

"Mitchell."

A man's voice responded.

"Sarah."

She recognized him immediately.

Daniel.

Sarah motioned for Brooks to trace the call.

"Where are you?"

Daniel laughed softly.

"You should ask where Evelyn is."

"We know she left voluntarily."

Silence.

Daniel had not expected that.

Sarah continued.

"We know about Avery."

Another pause.

Daniel's voice became colder.

"Then you're farther ahead than I thought."

"Come in."

"No."

"If you care about your mother, come in."

Daniel exhaled.

"You still don't understand."

"Then explain it."

"You think Box 317 is evidence."

Sarah waited.

Daniel continued.

"It isn't."

"What is it?"

"It's insurance."

"For whom?"

Daniel laughed again.

"For the person your father was really afraid of."

The call disconnected.

Brooks looked at the trace.

"We got a location."

Sarah stepped closer.

"Where?"

Brooks stared at the screen.

Then she looked up.

"The Pentagon City Hotel."

Sarah frowned.

"Daniel's there?"

Brooks shook her head.

"The phone is."

Sarah understood the trap instantly.

Daniel wanted them to chase a device.

Then Claire's phone rang.

She answered before anyone could stop her.

Her face changed.

"Daniel?"

Sarah moved closer.

Claire listened.

Then whispered.

"What do you mean?"

Sarah took the phone.

"Daniel."

His voice came through clearly.

"Tell Brooks to stop tracing me."

Sarah looked at Brooks.

Daniel continued.

"And tell Sarah to check the photograph from the bank again."

Sarah's eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

"Because she's been staring at the wrong person."

The line disconnected.

Sarah pulled up the photograph.

James.

Evelyn.

Daniel.

Grant.

Kessler.

She enlarged it.

At first, she saw nothing new.

Then she noticed a reflection in the glass behind them.

Another man stood outside the photographed group.

Only part of his face was visible.

Brooks stared.

"Do you know him?"

Sarah did.

She had saluted that man less than six months ago.

May you like

General William Rourke.

Her current commanding officer.
