Chapter 3 - Page FourteenBy six that evening, the penthouse no longer belonged to the Harrow family in any practical sense.

Federal personnel moved quietly through the rooms.

Each item taken from the residence was photographed and logged.

Suitcases sat open near the hallway.

Claire packed almost nothing.

She remained beside the black marble desk, staring at the place where her father's letter had been hidden.

Sarah stood near the windows speaking to Special Agent Lena Brooks.

Brooks had worked the Northstar Meridian investigation for eleven months.

She wore a plain charcoal suit and carried the tired expression of someone who had stopped being surprised by wealthy people with complicated secrets.

Sarah handed her James's letter.

Brooks read silently.

Then she looked up.

"This changes the timeline."

Sarah folded her arms.

"How much?"

"A lot."

Brooks pointed toward the missing section in the federal file.

"If Page Fourteen contains a transfer agreement dated after your father's death, somebody manufactured part of the estate record."

Sarah nodded.

"And if Grant Vale prepared it?"

"Then your family attorney becomes more than a witness."

Across the room, Daniel was speaking with another agent.

He appeared calm again.

Too calm.

Brooks followed Sarah's gaze.

"He asked for counsel."

"Of course he did."

"That's not suspicious."

"I know."

Sarah looked toward Evelyn.

The older woman sat alone near the fireplace.

"Her story about the brake line?"

"We'll check old maintenance and insurance records."

"After seventeen years?"

Brooks shrugged.

"People keep strange things."

Sarah looked at the brass token marked 317.

"So do dead colonels."

Brooks took the token.

"I can trace the bank."

Sarah shook her head.

"I'm coming."

"You're too close to this."

Sarah's expression remained firm.

"My father left it to me."

"And you're also attached to a federal task force investigating members of your family."

"They aren't my family."

Brooks watched her.

Sarah looked away.

That answer had come too quickly.

Brooks said nothing.

She didn't need to.

Claire approached them.

"Officer Mitchell?"

Sarah turned.

Claire held a thin folder.

"I found something."

Daniel's head immediately lifted from across the room.

Sarah noticed.

"What is it?"

Claire handed her the folder.

"Copies of old estate records."

"Where?"

"Mom's bedroom."

Evelyn looked over.

"I told her she could take them."

Daniel walked toward them.

"What are you doing?"

Claire faced him.

"Trying to understand why none of us knew the truth."

"You know the truth."

"No."

Claire shook her head.

"I know the version you kept repeating."

Daniel reached for the folder.

Sarah blocked his hand.

"Don't."

His eyes met hers.

"It's family property."

Sarah replied quietly.

"Not anymore."

Brooks stepped closer.

"Mr. Harrow, return to Agent Cooper."

Daniel stared at Sarah for several seconds.

Then he walked away.

Claire exhaled.

"He scares me."

Sarah looked at her.

"Has he ever hurt you?"

Claire immediately shook her head.

"No."

Then she hesitated.

"Not like that."

Sarah waited.

Claire lowered her voice.

"He just knows how to make people feel like they're wrong."

Sarah understood that kind of person.

Daniel had been doing it since they were teenagers.

If Sarah questioned him, she was jealous.

If Claire disagreed with him, she was emotional.

If Evelyn objected, she was confused.

If James became suspicious, he was paranoid.

Daniel never needed to win an argument.

He only needed everyone else to doubt themselves.

Sarah opened the folder Claire had found.

The first pages were ordinary property records.

Then she found a photocopy labeled FOURTEENTH SUPPLEMENTAL TRANSFER.

Her pulse increased.

Claire noticed.

"Is that it?"

Sarah carefully placed the copy on the desk.

The document transferred all ownership rights in the penthouse and several related accounts from James Mitchell to Evelyn Harrow.

The date was October seventeenth.

Five days after James's death.

At the bottom was James Mitchell's signature.

Sarah stared at it.

Even without a forensic expert, she knew something was wrong.

Her father had always written the "J" in James with a long lower curve.

This signature had none.

Claire pointed to the witness section.

Her own name appeared there.

CLAIRE HARROW.

Sarah looked at her.

"You were twelve."

Claire nodded.

"I remember sitting right there."

She pointed to a chair near the desk.

"Grant put his hand over mine and showed me where to sign."

Sarah felt anger rise.

"You were a child."

"He said witnesses could be family."

"Not when they're twelve and witnessing a dead man's signature."

Claire wiped her eyes.

"I didn't know he was already dead when they said the paper was signed."

Sarah looked at her.

"What?"

Claire frowned.

"They told me your father had signed it before the accident."

Sarah pointed to the date.

"But the document says October seventeenth."

Claire stared.

Her face changed.

"I never saw the date."

Sarah looked toward Evelyn.

Evelyn immediately lowered her eyes.

Sarah carried the document across the room.

"Evelyn."

No answer.

"Evelyn, look at me."

The older woman slowly raised her head.

Sarah placed Page Fourteen in front of her.

"Did you know the date was false?"

Evelyn's eyes filled.

Daniel shouted from across the room.

"Don't answer that."

Brooks turned sharply.

"Mr. Harrow."

Daniel stopped talking.

Sarah crouched slightly so she was level with Evelyn.

"Did you know?"

Evelyn whispered.

"Not at first."

Sarah felt the words like a physical impact.

"When did you find out?"

"Later."

"How much later?"

"A few weeks."

"And you kept the property."

Evelyn looked at the penthouse.

"I had two children."

"You had my father's property."

"He wanted us protected."

"Did he?"

Sarah's voice shook for the first time.

"Because the letter he left says he was trying to stop this."

Evelyn began crying.

"I was afraid."

"Of losing money?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Evelyn looked toward Daniel.

Sarah followed her gaze.

Daniel stood across the room, perfectly still.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

"Of losing my son."

Sarah frowned.

"What had Daniel done?"

Evelyn shook her head.

"I can't."

Sarah stood.

"You can."

"I can't."

Daniel spoke again.

"Mom."

This time Brooks immediately moved between them.

"Mr. Harrow, do not communicate with her."

Daniel's eyes hardened.

Evelyn stared at him.

Something passed between mother and son.

Fear.

History.

And perhaps guilt.

Then Evelyn looked back at Sarah.

"Your father found an account."

Sarah's heartbeat quickened.

"What account?"

"A private account overseas."

"Whose?"

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Daniel's."

The room became silent again.

Sarah looked at Daniel.

Daniel did not deny it.

Evelyn continued.

"James believed money from Northstar Meridian was being transferred into it."

Sarah asked the question slowly.

"How much?"

Evelyn opened her eyes.

"At the time?"

Sarah nodded.

Evelyn whispered.

"Eleven million dollars."

Claire gasped.

Daniel stared at his mother.

Sarah remembered her father's final line.

Trust documents, not stories.

Now she finally understood why Page Fourteen mattered.

It was never just about ownership.

It was about control.

The penthouse transfer gave Evelyn control of James's estate.

And whoever controlled the estate could decide which records disappeared with him.

Sarah looked at the brass token again.

Somewhere, perhaps inside Box 317, James Mitchell had hidden the records Daniel had spent seventeen years trying to erase.

And by morning, Sarah intended to find them.
