Chapter 15 - Siege at the Safehouse

"We need to move. Now."

I didn't bother explaining the phone call to Collins on the drive back. The sheer panic in my voice was enough. By the time we reached my house, the sun had set, casting long, ominous shadows across the suburban lawn.

Briggs and Miller, my private security, were standing on the porch. I rushed past them, bursting through the front door.

"Lily!" I screamed.

"Dad!" She ran out of the kitchen, clutching her iPad, looking alarmed. I dropped to my knees and crushed her in a hug, burying my face in her hair. She was safe. She was still here.

"Daniel, talk to me," Collins said, locking the deadbolt behind us. "What did Evelyn say?"

I told her. The cartel. The hundred million dollars. The real reason Michael was murdered in jail.

Collins went pale. "We can't stay here. This house is a glass box. If a cartel hit squad is coming, two private contractors with handguns aren't going to stop them. We need to get you to an FBI safehouse immediately."

She made the call. Within twenty minutes, two black, armored SUVs pulled into my driveway. Agents in tactical gear escorted Lily and me out of the house. We left everything behind.

They took us to an undisclosed location fifty miles outside the city—a fortified, brutalist concrete structure hidden deep in a wooded nature reserve. It had steel shutters on the windows, a reinforced steel door, and a perimeter monitored by motion sensors.

"You're safe here," the lead FBI agent, a stern man named Harrison, assured me as we settled into the sparse living room. "We have six heavily armed agents on the perimeter. Nothing gets within a mile of this place without us knowing."

Lily fell asleep on the small cot in the back room, exhausted by the sudden upheaval. I sat at the kitchen table, staring blankly at a cup of instant coffee, while Collins monitored the radio feeds.

It was 2:00 AM.

The woods outside were eerily silent.

"We got her, Daniel," Collins said softly, sitting across from me. "Marcus Vance is singing like a canary. Evelyn is going to be indicted for murder by tomorrow morning. You protected your daughter."

"I just wanted her to be safe," I whispered, rubbing my face. "I just wanted to be a good dad. And now... now we're hiding from a cartel because my wife's mother was a money launderer."

Before Collins could respond, a sharp, electronic BEEP echoed through the safehouse.

The motion sensors.

Agent Harrison's voice crackled over Collins' radio. “Perimeter team, we have movement in sector four. Sounds like vehicles approaching with lights out. Call it in.”

Silence on the radio.

“Perimeter team, respond.” Harrison’s voice was tighter now.

Nothing. Dead air.

Suddenly, the power in the safehouse cut completely. We were plunged into total, suffocating darkness.

"Get down!" Collins hissed, racking the slide of her gun and pulling out a tactical flashlight.

I scrambled backward, crawling toward the bedroom where Lily was sleeping. I heard the frantic shouts of the agents outside, followed by the terrifying, deafening crackle of suppressed automatic weapons.

Pffft. Pffft. Pffft.

The reinforced steel door of the safehouse shuddered as something heavy slammed against it.

They weren't sending lawyers. They weren't filing petitions. Evelyn’s monsters had arrived, and they didn't care about custody. They only cared about blood.

I reached the bedroom, grabbing Lily as she woke up screaming. I pulled her into the small master bathroom, locking the door behind us, and pushed her into the cast-iron bathtub, covering her body with mine.

Outside the bathroom, the heavy steel door of the safehouse was blown off its hinges with an explosive charge that rattled my teeth. Footsteps—heavy, deliberate, and numerous—flooded into the living room.

The real nightmare had just begun.
