Chapter 7 - The Music Box

I didn’t go to the police. Detective Collins was a good cop, but Evelyn owned the system. If I handed Collins forged documents, Evelyn’s lawyers would bury us in red tape while they spun the narrative. I needed something irrefutable. I needed the ghost of my wife to speak.

I drove straight to the bank.

Before Anna died, she had been incredibly stressed. She was auditing the Hart Family Foundation, working late into the night. Two days before her accident, she had asked me to pick up a small, wooden music box from an antique repair shop in town. It was a family heirloom, left to her by her grandmother. She had insisted it go straight into our joint safety deposit box for "safekeeping until Lily turns eighteen."

At the time, I thought nothing of it. But standing in the vault of the downtown Chase branch, with the steel box resting on a private viewing table, my heart hammered against my ribs.

I opened the lid of the safety deposit box. Inside lay our marriage certificate, the deed to the house, and the dark mahogany music box.

I carefully lifted it out. It was heavy. Too heavy.

I turned the small brass key on the side. The lid popped open, and a tiny, delicate ballerina began to spin to a hauntingly slow rendition of Clair de Lune. But the velvet compartment meant for rings and necklaces was empty.

I flipped the box over. My fingers traced the wooden base. I pressed the corners, feeling for a seam. There. The bottom right corner clicked softly under my thumb.

I slid the false wooden panel back.

Tucked inside a hollowed-out cavity was a small, black USB drive and a single, handwritten note on yellow legal paper. I recognized Anna's elegant, sloping handwriting instantly. Tears pricked my eyes as I unfolded it.

Danny, If you are reading this, something has happened to me. Evelyn knows I found the missing funds. It's not just the charity. She's using the foundation to funnel money to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, and Michael is helping her clean it. I'm taking this evidence to the FBI on Monday. If I don't make it, trust no one. Especially Michael. I love you and Lily more than life itself. Burn her to the ground. - Anna

A sob ripped from my throat. I pressed the letter to my face, inhaling as if I could catch a lingering trace of her scent. She had known. She was terrified, and she had fought to protect us, right up to her final breath.

I plugged the USB drive into my laptop.

Rows upon rows of spreadsheets illuminated the screen. Bank routing numbers, wire transfer receipts, offshore account registries, and encrypted emails between Evelyn and a shell corporation. It was a digital map of a multi-million dollar money-laundering empire.

Burn her to the ground.

I closed the laptop and slipped the USB drive into my pocket.

Evelyn wanted a war over Lily. But she didn't realize she had just given me the nuclear launch codes.
