Chapter 4 - The Hospital Trap

By 6:00 PM, the Pediatric ICU was eerily quiet. The rhythmic beeping of Lily's heart monitor was the only sound in the dimly lit room.

I sat beside her bed, holding her hand. She was asleep, her breathing finally deep and steady. The steroids had done their job. She was going to be okay. But the nightmare was far from over.

Outside the room, the hallway was deserted. Or so it appeared.

In reality, Detective Collins and two plainclothes officers were stationed in the empty supply closet across the hall, watching the live feed from a tiny camera hidden inside a flower arrangement on Lily's bedside table.

We had taken a massive gamble. Thirty minutes ago, I called Michael. I told him I was exhausted, that the doctors had given Lily a sedative, and that I was going down to the hospital cafeteria to get a coffee and clear my head for an hour. I left the door unlocked.

I knew Michael couldn't resist. If he thought I was leaving Lily alone and vulnerable, he would come. He needed to ensure the narrative held up. He needed to plant the final piece of evidence.

At 6:15 PM, the heavy wooden door to the ICU room clicked open.

I didn't turn around. I remained slumped in the chair, pretending to be asleep, my head resting near Lily's legs.

Soft, stealthy footsteps entered the room. The squeak of rubber-soled sneakers on linoleum. I knew those footsteps. I had heard them pacing the halls of my home for two years.

"Danny?" Michael whispered. It was barely a breath.

I didn't move. I kept my breathing deep and even, praying my trembling shoulders wouldn't give me away.

Michael moved closer. I could smell him now—the distinct scent of his cheap cologne mixed with nervous sweat. He stood at the foot of the bed, looking down at Lily.

Through the reflection of the dark windowpane across the room, I watched him.

He reached into his jacket pocket. Slowly, deliberately, he pulled out a small, bright yellow object.

An epinephrine injector.

It wasn't the one Evelyn had stolen. It was a brand new one. He was going to plant it in Lily's hospital bag, ensuring the police would find it and conclude that I had simply forgotten to use it in my panic. It was the final nail in my coffin.

"I'm sorry, kiddo," Michael whispered to the sleeping girl. "But your dad is just... broken. He can't take care of you anymore."

He moved toward the small duffel bag I had brought from home, unzipping the front pocket to slide the injector inside.

"Put it down, Michael," I said.

My voice shattered the silence like a gunshot.

Michael froze. He spun around, dropping the injector on the floor. His eyes were wide with shock, staring at me as I slowly sat up in the chair.

"Danny..." he stammered, his hands shooting up in a defensive gesture. "I... I thought you were in the cafeteria. I just came to check on her."

"To check on her?" I stood up, my voice dangerously low. I stepped over the dropped EpiPen, closing the distance between us. "Or to plant the evidence Evelyn paid you to plant?"

Michael's face drained of color. He took a step back, bumping into the IV pole. "I don't know what you're talking about. I found this in your car! I brought it here because I thought you might need it."

"Liar." The word ripped from my throat. "You didn't find it in my car. You bought it to frame me. Just like you and Evelyn framed me at the luncheon."

"Danny, you're crazy. The stress is getting to you!" Michael tried to inject that familiar, condescending warmth into his voice, but it cracked. "Evelyn is your mother-in-law. She loves Lily."

"Evelyn is in a holding cell," I said, watching the exact moment his world collapsed.

Michael's jaw dropped. "What?"

"She was arrested three hours ago for attempted murder," I said, stepping closer until I was inches from his face. "They found Lily's stolen EpiPen in her car. She's already talking, Mike. She's telling the police everything. She told them about the trust fund. She told them about your petition for guardianship."

I was lying about Evelyn talking, but Michael didn't know that.

Panic consumed his features. His eyes darted toward the door, calculating his escape. "No... no, she wouldn't do that. She promised she'd protect me."

"Protect you from what, Michael?" I pushed, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. "From the two hundred thousand dollars you owe to the mob? Or from the fact that you helped her murder my wife?"

Michael let out a pathetic, strangled gasp. His knees buckled slightly, and he leaned against the wall for support.

"You know," he whispered, staring at the floor.

"I know."

Suddenly, the door to the ICU room swung open. Detective Collins walked in, her badge prominently displayed, followed by two uniformed officers.

"Michael Hart," Collins said, her voice sharp and authoritative. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, evidence tampering, and fraud."

As the officers moved in to handcuff him, Michael didn't fight back. He just looked at me, a pathetic, weeping mess.

"Danny, I'm sorry!" he cried as the cold steel clicked around his wrists. "Evelyn made me do it! She said she was going to cut off the money! They were going to kill me, Danny! I had to help her!"

"Get him out of my sight," I snarled, turning my back on him.

May you like

As they dragged my brother out into the hallway, I thought it was over. I thought we had won.

But I had underestimated the devil I was dealing with.
