Chapter 19 - The Ride Home

Monday morning arrived with sunlight.

Claire had expected rain.

Something dramatic.

Instead, the sky was perfectly ordinary.

That made her cry.

Ben loaded the car.

Evelyn checked the diaper bag three times.

Sophie wore her pink dress.

“The same kind as the first day.”

She explained.

“For luck.”

Michael arrived carrying balloons.

The nurse made him leave them outside the NICU.

He complained.

Sophie told him.

“Rules.”

He obeyed.

Noah wore a tiny blue outfit Evelyn had bought weeks earlier.

It had once looked impossibly small.

Now it fit.

Claire stared at him.

“He looks like a real baby.”

Ben raised an eyebrow.

“He was always real.”

“You know what I mean.”

“I do.”

The nurse reviewed instructions.

Claire nodded.

Ben nodded.

Evelyn nodded.

Sophie nodded even when no one was speaking to her.

Finally, the nurse removed the last hospital sensor.

Claire began crying.

Sophie sighed.

“Mom.”

“I know.”

“Dramatic.”

“Yes.”

The nurse placed Noah in Claire’s arms.

“No more incubator.”

Claire looked toward it.

The clear plastic shell stood empty.

For the first time, it looked like an object.

Not a world.

Not a barrier.

Not the center of their lives.

Just equipment waiting for the next family who would need it.

Claire kissed Noah’s forehead.

“Ready?”

Ben asked.

“No.”

He smiled.

“Me neither.”

They walked out anyway.

That was another lesson the NICU had taught them.

Ready was not always required.

Sometimes you went because it was time.

In the lobby, Sophie walked beside the stroller.

Everyone seemed too close.

Too fast.

Too loud.

Claire noticed strangers looking at Noah.

She wanted to cover him.

Protect him.

Take him back upstairs where trained people controlled everything.

Ben touched her shoulder.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Want to stop?”

“Yes.”

They stopped.

Claire breathed.

“I feel like we’re stealing him.”

Ben laughed softly.

“We have paperwork.”

“Not helping.”

“You carried him.”

“Still.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“You don’t have to feel brave.”

Claire looked at her.

“Just walk.”

Claire nodded.

They reached the car.

Ben checked the car seat.

Then checked it again.

Then a third time.

Claire smiled.

“Who’s dramatic now?”

“Safety is not drama.”

“Sure.”

Sophie climbed into her seat.

“Noah sits next to me.”

“Yes.”

“He likes me best.”

Ben raised an eyebrow.

“Bold claim.”

“He looked at me first.”

Claire started to correct her.

Then decided not to.

The drive home took forty-two minutes.

Ben drove twenty miles below his normal speed.

Other drivers passed.

One honked.

Ben ignored them.

Sophie talked to Noah the entire way.

“You’re going to see your house.”

“You have a room.”

“I made you pictures.”

“Grandma comes all the time.”

“Uncle Michael is mostly not bald.”

Evelyn laughed from the front seat.

Claire sat beside Noah.

She watched every breath.

Ben glanced at her in the mirror.

“He’s breathing.”

“I know.”

Five minutes later.

“He’s still breathing.”

“I know.”

Claire looked at him.

“Stop.”

“Sorry.”

At the house, Michael had arrived first.

He stood outside with the balloons.

Sophie jumped out.

“He’s home!”

The front door opened.

A neighbor waved.

Claire suddenly felt overwhelmed.

“No crowd.”

Michael immediately understood.

He moved the balloons aside.

“Just us.”

Claire nodded gratefully.

Ben carried the car seat inside.

Sophie led the procession like a tour guide.

“This is the living room.”

“Noah has seen a living room before.”

Ben said.

“Not ours.”

“Fair.”

They entered the nursery.

Claire lifted Noah carefully.

She placed him in the crib.

Everyone stood around.

No one spoke.

No alarms.

No monitor beeps.

No nurses.

Only Noah’s breathing.

Claire immediately hated the quiet.

“It’s too quiet.”

Ben put a hand around her.

“We’ll get used to it.”

“What if we don’t?”

“Then Sophie will fix that.”

From the hallway came a crash.

Sophie yelled.

“I’m okay.”

Ben smiled.

“See?”

Claire laughed.

Evelyn leaned against the doorway.

Her eyes filled.

“He’s home.”

Claire nodded.

“He’s home.”

That night, nobody slept much.

Claire checked Noah repeatedly.

Ben did too.

At 3:15 a.m., they met in the hallway.

“You too?”

Claire asked.

“Yep.”

“He’s fine.”

“I know.”

She smiled.

“Want coffee?”

“At three in the morning?”

“Yes.”

“Absolutely.”

They sat at the kitchen table.

The emergency-money drawing still hung on the refrigerator.

The mortgage papers sat in a folder.

Life was not magically repaired.

There were appointments ahead.

Bills.

Counseling.

Work.

Fear.

But upstairs, Noah slept.

Sophie slept in the room beside him.

Evelyn had gone home for the first time in weeks.

Ben reached across the table.

Claire took his hand.

“We made it home.”

He nodded.

“We did.”

Upstairs, a baby cried.

Both stood instantly.

May you like

Then they looked at each other.

And laughed.
