Chapter 3 - A Name No One Said

Claire signed the transfer consent at 11:17 in the morning.

By 11:30, three nurses were preparing Noah for transport.

Sophie watched every movement.

She did not cry.

That worried Evelyn more than when she did.

The little girl stood beside the wall with her hands pressed against the skirt of her pink dress, following the nurses with her eyes.

Claire spoke quietly with the transport team.

She asked the same questions twice.

Would Noah be cold?

Would someone stay beside him?

Would the ambulance use sirens?

Would he know she was not inside with him?

The nurse answered every question patiently.

“He will never be alone.”

Claire nodded.

That sentence had become the only one she seemed capable of trusting.

Evelyn packed Claire’s bag.

Phone charger.

Sweater.

Water bottle.

Documents.

A half-eaten package of crackers.

She found Claire’s phone beneath the chair.

The battery was almost dead.

Evelyn plugged it into the wall.

The screen lit.

Seven missed calls.

All from the same number.

BEN.

Evelyn stared.

The latest call had come twenty-three minutes earlier.

She looked across the room.

Claire was listening to a doctor.

Sophie was watching Noah.

The phone vibrated again.

BEN.

Evelyn picked it up.

Her thumb hovered over the answer button.

For months, she had imagined what she would say to Ben if he appeared.

She had rehearsed entire speeches in her kitchen.

You left your wife.

You left your daughter.

You left when your son needed you.

But now she knew that the truth was not what she had believed.

Claire had told him to go.

He had tried to return.

He had called.

And somehow, he was still calling.

The phone stopped.

A voicemail notification appeared.

Evelyn pressed it.

Ben’s voice filled the tiny speaker.

“Claire, please answer.”

“I just landed.”

“I’ve been trying to reach you.”

“I know you’re angry.”

“I know I don’t deserve an easy conversation.”

“But please tell me where you are.”

“I’m going to the house first.”

“If you aren’t there, I’ll call your mom.”

Evelyn stopped the message.

Her hands went cold.

He had just landed.

Today.

Not the night Noah was born.

Claire had said he was coming home that night.

Something did not fit.

“Mom?”

Claire stood behind her.

Evelyn turned.

“You have seven missed calls.”

Claire’s face changed.

“From him?”

“Yes.”

Claire took the phone.

She stared at Ben’s name.

“What did he say?”

“He landed.”

Claire frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“You said he was flying back the night Noah was born.”

“He was supposed to.”

Claire opened the voicemail.

She listened.

Her face went pale.

“He never came.”

“What?”

“That night.”

“He called from the airport.”

“He said the flight was delayed.”

“Then he called again and said it had been canceled.”

“I was already on the way when the contractions started.”

“So he stayed away?”

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“I was taken to the hospital.”

“My phone died.”

“Then everything happened.”

“After Noah was born, I tried calling him.”

“How many times?”

“Dozens.”

“No answer.”

“For six days?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn felt anger return.

“That’s not acceptable.”

Claire stared at the phone.

“He’s calling now.”

“Then answer.”

“I can’t.”

“Claire.”

“I can’t do this right before they move Noah.”

“Then I’ll answer.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t know what I want him to hear first.”

Sophie stepped closer.

“I do.”

Both women turned.

Sophie looked at the phone.

“Tell Daddy Noah is here.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“He knows I was pregnant.”

“No.”

Sophie shook her head impatiently.

“Tell him Noah is here now.”

The simplicity of it broke through every complicated adult thought in the room.

Claire looked at her daughter.

Then at the phone.

Ben called again.

Claire answered.

For two seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Ben’s voice came through.

“Claire?”

Her face crumpled.

“Where have you been?”

“Claire, I can explain.”

“Where have you been?”

“I was trying to get back.”

“For six days?”

“No.”

“There was a problem.”

“What problem?”

“I was in the hospital.”

Claire froze.

Evelyn stared at the phone.

“What?”

Ben took a breath.

“My flight was canceled.”

“I rented a car.”

“About two hours outside the city, another driver hit us on the highway.”

Claire gripped the phone tighter.

“I woke up the next day.”

“My phone was gone.”

“My wallet was gone.”

“I didn’t know your number.”

Evelyn frowned.

“You didn’t know your wife’s number?”

Ben heard her.

“Evelyn?”

“Yes.”

“I know how that sounds.”

“I had every number stored in my phone.”

“I remembered the first six digits.”

“I kept trying combinations.”

“I finally got into my email yesterday.”

“I found Claire’s number in an old receipt.”

Claire sat down.

“Are you hurt?”

“Bruised.”

“Stitches.”

“Nothing serious.”

“Where are you?”

“Airport parking lot.”

“I flew in this morning.”

Claire looked toward Noah.

Her breathing changed.

“Ben.”

“Yes.”

“The baby came.”

Silence.

Complete silence.

Then Ben whispered.

“What?”

“He came six weeks early.”

Another silence.

“Is he okay?”

Claire looked at the incubator.

“They’re moving him to Children’s.”

Ben’s voice cracked.

“I’m coming.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Ben.”

“I’m coming.”

“Wait.”

“No.”

“Please.”

“I’ve already missed six days.”

“I am not missing another minute.”

The call ended.

Claire stared at the screen.

Evelyn crossed her arms.

Sophie looked toward the hallway as though Ben might appear immediately.

“When is Daddy coming?”

Claire whispered.

“Soon.”

A nurse entered.

“We’re ready to move Noah.”

Claire turned.

For a second, she seemed torn between two worlds.

The husband she had thought abandoned her.

The son she was terrified of losing.

Evelyn stepped beside her.

“Go with Noah.”

“What about Ben?”

“I’ll handle Ben.”

Claire looked suspicious.

“Handle him how?”

Evelyn sighed.

“Politely.”

Claire almost smiled.

The nurses unlocked the incubator wheels.

Sophie stepped forward quickly.

“Wait.”

Everyone stopped.

She approached the plastic shell.

She placed her hand against it.

“Daddy is coming.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

Sophie looked at Noah.

“So you better stay.”

The transport nurse gently smiled.

Then the incubator began rolling toward the door.

Claire walked beside it.

Evelyn followed with Sophie.

As the elevator doors opened, Evelyn’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice spoke.

“Mrs. Bennett?”

“Yes?”

“This is Officer Grant with the state highway patrol.”

Evelyn stopped walking.

“I’m calling about your son-in-law’s accident.”

May you like

Her heart dropped.

“There’s something we need to discuss.”
